Yeehaw! :dancing:

Wife and I are celebrating our 5th anniversary by taking a little trip to sunny Florida. :yup: (that’s a sun-burned, yet happy face)

Looking for recommendations!
  • churches (catholic, duh!)
  • shrines
  • restaurants
  • other sights
Thanks all!

Congratulations on your anniversary! I live in a suburb of Jacksonville called Orange Park and I am 30 miles from St. Augustine, so I can be of some assistance to you. St. Augustine is my favorite place to get away, my husband & I usually go there for our anniversary which is coming up in October. Here are some recommendations:
Church- Immaculate Conception in downtown Jacksonville. It happens to be the Church I attend (it’s about 20 minutes away from my house). The website is: www.immaculateconceptionjax.org if you are looking for a Church in St. Augustine, I would suggest the Basilica downtown, it is the Mother Church for our Diocese of St. Augustine, I’ll try to get the website for you.
Shrines- www.missionandshrine.org/ is Mission of Nombre De Dios and Our Lady of Le Leche. The mission is where Pedro Menendez landed on Sept. 8, 1565. Fr. Lopez was the Chaplain for the expedition and said the first Catholic Mass in this Country . It is a beautiful place to visit. Very peaceful & serene. They also have a nice gift shop on the grounds.
There are alot of good restaurants in Jacksonville & St. Augustine. What type are you looking for? How long are you staying? Are your accommodations in St. Augustine or Jacksonville? Oh, and when are you going so I can make sure I get back to you in time?🙂
Here is the website for the Cathedral Basilica in St. Augustine: www.thefirstparish.org ( Pope John Paul II named it a Minor Basilica)

Awesome. Thanks for all the info!

We will arrive this Monday evening and be there for a week.

We probably won’t have much money for eating out…maybe just once or twice. We like Mexican, Italian and Pizza. I’m also a big Indian fan, but I may be on my own for that!

We’ll be in Jacksonville. We’ll probably only make it to St. Aug for a day trip. I hope we are staying close to your church, so I can try to make it to daily mass! But I’m not sure yet of our specific location because we are staying at a house of a friend-of-a-friend. Regardless, I will plan on being there Sunday morn.

If I knew what side of town you will be staying, that could help, but no biggy. My favorite Italian restaurant in Jax is Sorrento. For Pizza, it’s Pizzalley’s Chianti Room in St. Augustine. It’s really fantastic. For Mexican, we like La Nopelara in Flemming Island, just a few minutes south of where I live (it’s brand new & clean) it’s authentic Mexican food and there are at least 5 more around Jacksonville, all run by the same family. The food is good and the prices are inexpensive. I haven’t been to any of the other locations, though. I hope you have a wonderful anniversary trip to my beautiful area of Florida. Maybe I’ll see you at Mass on Sunday;) Oh, speaking of, in case you do come downtown, I don’t recommend going to the 12:00 noon Mass on Sunday if the Jaguars have a 1:00 game. The traffic is pretty thick. I go to the 10:00 Mass on those days.🙂

It’s been 31 years since I’ve been in St. Augustine—my husband and I visited there when we were first married. There is a big old stone fort there, and a cemetary and chapel on the outskirts of it–the chapel is dedicated to mothers and those who want to be mothers…I can’t remember the name. But we were having trouble conceiving, so went in there and prayed…Oh my…I was pregnant within a month, and had two babies in a 13 month period!!! Talk about powerful!

The name is Our Lady of La Leche. Here is the website: www.missionandshrine.org/ . I understand there are many, many awesome stories like yours after prayer at the shrine! God Bless!🙂

Ok, just found out where we’re staying. Without giving out my address on a public forum, looks like we’re within a mile of Blessed Trinity Parish…but if architecture could speak:

Okay. You will be staying in the Southside area of Jacksonville. You’re about 15 minutes from Jax beaches. Joe’s Crab Shack right on the beach has just about any kind of food and you can’t beat the view if you eat outside. Ragtime is really good and is known for their Coconut Shrimp, but they have a variety of food to choose from on their menu. You are close to the new area called the St. Johns Towncenter where they have alot of shopping and restaurants like The Cheescake Factory:yup: and Maggiano’s Italian Restaurant, which are chains. I know where Blessed Trinity is located but I have never been there. I know what you mean about the architechture,😦 most of the Churches around here are like that but not all. I think my Church building (Immaculate Conception)is the oldest & most traditional looking Catholic Church in Jacksonville. It may take you 15- 20 minutes to get to Church downtown if you decide to go. You could Mapquest it for driving directions.
Have a wonderful trip!🙂
