Jail Ministry / Catholic Reources

In June I was asked to serve in Jail Ministry for the Diocese of Charlotte. I had been praying for some time that Jesus would make known to me in what ministry I could serve Him. Jail Ministry is not what I had in mind but I knew that it would be wrong for me to say “no” in light of the fact that I had been praying for an opportunity to serve Jesus in ministry.
I am so happy and grateful that I agreed. I enjoy spending time with the inmates and in sharing faith with them. We have been using the Symbolon DVD series with Dr. Edward Sri. What I appreciate about the Symbolon DVD series is that it introduces and explains the Catholic faith in a very subtle manner. It would be helpful to have additional Catholic resources for Jail Ministry.
I looked Online for additional Catholic resources for Jail Ministry. I found a great deal of resources for Evangelical Christianity but did not find much in terms of Catholic resources for Jail Ministry. It is important to me that the material used in Jail Ministry be true to the teachings of Holy Mother Church.
I would greatly appreciate any information on where I can access Catholic resources for Jail Ministry. Thank you.

Lighthouse Catholic Media (which is now part of the Augustine Institute) has a number of booklets, books & pamphlets that could be purchased in bulk.

There are also CDs, but I’m not sure if CDs would be an option in prison ministry.

Also, there is a Catholic Apostolate that gives out Catholic Bibles for free, as many as you need.

The Bibles are the “Today’s English Version, Second Edition, American Bible Society” which is an approved translation from the USCCB. That translation is also often called the “Good News Bible”

One thing to consider when working in prison ministry is the opportunity to minister to the jail staff. Most corrections officers and jail deputies are notoriously overworked and have a colossal amount of stress on them working in that environment. From having working with law enforcement working in a corrections settings I have asked many of them if the jail chaplains or ministers have ever come talked to them and I have never once heard of it happening.

I understand of course that the principal focus of jail ministry is the inmates since they have limited opportunities to be ministered to, but there is a great opportunity to provide a kind word of support to the officers who are usually running around like a madman trying to get done all the responsibilities that are put on them as well as trying to not get through the day in one piece.
