I have been told by a “born-again” Christian again and again “Accepting Jesus Christ is the ONLY way to the Father which is in HEAVEN.No religion or religions will enter to Heaven BECAUSE religions are man made for popularity, prestige, and most of ALL is MONEY.”

"The Catholic religion has nothing to offer in terms of Salvation because of TRADITION…Salvation is found through Christ only because in John 14:6 he said I am the WAY,the TRUTH,and the LIFE.

Don’t be mixed up with Jesus and religion. The two are opposed to each other."
**
then when I showed up James 1:27 to show that there is such a religion which God accepts, and which I think opposes his claims, he responded this:**

“James 1:27 are all Jews. Read them again starting from verse 1-27.The book of James is a TRIBULATIONAL CONTEXT. The book of James does not apply to a Catholic religion.”

“The Jews are not Catholics for your information. The Jews in that passage “PURE RELIGION”…acceptable by God-because they are required to do good works. It did not mean they are going to heaven because they still have to deal with God in Revelation 22 by doing good works and keeping the commandments sort of OT times.”

what should I say then?

(** This is James 1:27 by the way**: “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” )

Your friend is using their “tradition” to make that arguement.

James is talking to Christians of his day. Probably Jewish Christians who were members of the earliest community of believers, that fled Palestine because of persecutions. They were the ones who accepted Jesus as the Messiah and spread the gospel to Jews outside of the holy land.

James is not talking “specifically” to a group of Jews (thousands of years in the future) going through THE TRIBULATION.

There are many ways to refute the modernist myth that Christianity is opposed to “religion” aside from the fact that the context of James 1:27 does not jibe with his interpretation. The text should line up with what he claims.

Also, please see the article “Christianity is a Religion” for the many ways the New Testament Church was “religious” contrary to the modernist evangelical claim. :o

I just read “Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic” by David Currie. He did an entire analysis on what he was taught (and once taught) as a Protestant, and what he learned when he began studying Catholicism. I would suggest that book to anyone with an evangelical or fundamentalist background who is open to learning what the Catholic church believes and how that lines up with scripture.

The Church says the God will nnot allow anyone to go to Hell if they are truely seeking to do His will.Back in the 50’smy school teacher 2nd grade nun told us that being a Catholic is the surest way to get to Heaven. The Church still teaches this. The Catholic Church was founded by Christ aand led by the HS and was given special graces. Most especially the sacremants.I don’t dispute persons who say what you have stated but just say a prayer for them.To me ists a worn out debate which has been going on since Luther. All Catholics should Thank God for the Church but shouldn’t brag over it.Catholics can rest in the fact that Christ lives and works through the Church.

:ehh: And this individual is giving you an interpretation based off his/her tradition.

the book of James does not apply to Catholics? huh? James 1:27 only applies to Jews? Why is it in the Christian bible? I must be missing something.

I can see why he would try to marginalize James. James kinda takes Sola Fide and laughs at it. In order to live with that strange belief (sola fide) as a lot of Fundamentalists seem to hold it, a lot of scripture has to be ignored or recast into something that never existed before.

“proper service to God is not reducible to a set of beliefs or liturgical rites; it includes prudent speech as well as practical service to others.”

The Ignatius Catholic Study Bible New Testament partial footnote on James 1:27.

I don’t see this as incompatible with Catholicism…quite the contrary. It supports it. Try reading James 1:22-27.
