St. Augustine on the Eucharist

It’s all in there. What James White ignores and what St. Augustine believed. James White is indeed ignoring everything Augustine believed about the Eucharist. No question.

White’s only point appears to be that Augustine did not hold to the full, explicit, later defined doctrine of transubstantiation. As JPrejean pointed out, while the term itself is used at Trent as the “most appropriate term” it is not dogma. Both Trent and Augustine believe Jesus Christ is “truly, really, and substantially” present in the Eucharist.

Sorry, Pilgrim, I’m not buyin’ it. Something just doesn’t ring true with you. I don’t know what you could do to convince me, but you simply seem too rude not to be intimately associated with James White’s ministry in some form or another. Do you formally renounce any association with his ministry?

Do you know anything about the writings of St. Augustine? What I have cited, repeatedly, are the classical passages on Eucharist from St. Augustine. The same passages, with the exact same references, that are cited by Schaff, JND Kelly, and Darwell Stone.

The references will allow you to look them up in any Church Fathers set. The passages I have cited come from Jurgens, Faith of the Early Fathers, and those same passages are cited by Schaff, Kelly, Stone. You can use the larger 38 volume set (ANF and NPNF) edited by Schaff/Wace or the set from NewAdvent.org to verify the quotes as well. They are St. Augustine’s classical Eucharist passages. Nothing tricky going on here.
