I’m a relatively recent convert having been especially moved by the teachings of the Church Fathers. I recently came across a website for James White, a protestant apologist, who spent a considerable amount of time dismissing Catholic Answers and gloating about how he had badly “beaten” Patrick Madrid on a variety of topics, including the question as to whether the early Church Fathers were, in fact, Catholic.

Does anyone have any info on this guy? Did he, in fact, present arguments for which Mr. Madrid was not able to respond?

You should be able to look up transcripts somewhere:confused: I have never heard of the guy,but he sounds pretty arrogant and untruthful as well. But, when you throw History out I guess you can make the argument"well you weren’t there were you"?God Bless

James White’s arguments are “so effective” that his sister came into the Catholic Church a few years ago. Go figure.

I think they that Patrick Madrian and Jaems White are debating again some time soon. I may be wrong, but I think that is the only reasonI rememebr his name that I saw an event being advertised on a web site. Maybe the Envoy site?

J White is a notorius anti-catholic bigot. According to him, he has NEVER lost a debate with any man or even God.

One series of debates he did lose (but not according to him) was his own sister, Patty Bonds. She converted to the Catholic Faith about 4 years ago. (from Baptist).
He now treats her as a lying deceived witch. And, therefore he did not lose his debates with her. Cool!

Not really. 😛 I think Madrid won that first debate from 1993 on sola scriptura. They debated again I believe 2002 on the saints. Edge to Pat Madrid both debates in my opinion. You can’t answer everything in these debates…

A debate White really hates is the Akin vs. White BAM debate from 1995. Offered by Catholic Answers again, that is the one to get. Apparently, according to White it wasn’t a debate since exciting back and forth radio debates aren’t debates.

Of course then the Pacwa vs. Martin “debate” from The John Ankerberg Show in the 1980s wasn’t a “debate” either. 😃

Here’s my scorecard of White’s debates, see near the bottom rated by the Official Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of Forensics 👍

I have seen a few things on this James White and his rather egotistical belief that he is the winner of all of the debates that he has against Catholic apologists.

Another good source on James White debates is Scott Windsor’s site americancatholictruthsociety.com/

I am very familiar with Scott’s work 🙂

Thanks all. I get the sense that in some respects these “debates” can be misleading in that they do a good job of identifying good debaters and a bad job of identifying bad theology.

Kind of like using the presidential debates to determine which candidate you intend to support. Too much of the decision is premised upon optics rather than substance.

Rather than discuss James White’s anti-Catholic bias we should all pray that one day, he too will come home to the Church. This thread is now closed.
