see AMM - Why do Catholics call Mary Mother of God?

“Catholics do call Mary “The Mother of God,” but this does not mean that Mary came before God. It does express our belief that Mary is truly the Mother of Jesus Christ, who from the first moment of his conception was both human and divine.”

“Therefore, belief in Mary as Mother of God is linked to belief in the reality of the Incarnation.”

“When we honor Mary as Mother of God, we are actually professing our belief that Jesus is truly God.”

Yes. Jesus was fully human and fully divine during his time on earth. His humanity he got from Mary.

This came as a result of a belief (heretical) that Jesus was somehow separated namely from His GOD nature while He was on Earth.
This merited that the Church convened a Council at Ephesus in 431 where this heresy was laid to rest.

The council asserted once and for all that:
GOD made man in the person of Jesus was born of a Virgin. Mary who conceived by the Holy Spirit, Jesus the Christ, fully man and Fully GOD.

Jesus is a person who happens to have a human nature as well as a GOD’s nature and they are not separated. Jesus asserted so Himself.
Jesus’s GOD nature was born of the Father before all ages.
GOD from GOD, Light from Light, true GOD from true GOD, begotten not made.
Jesus Human person and human nature were born of the Virgin Mary.

Because she is the mother of a person Jesus who happens to have 2 natures
Mary is the Mother of GOD (Theotokos).
Mothers give birth and become mothers of persons not natures.

Thanks for posting this! It is amazing to me that many Catholics are so lacking in knowledge of why Catholics believe what they believe and particularly regarding our Blessed Mother. Adult Faith Formation is sadly lacking in our day.

Children’s programs have gotten better after the poor catechesis following Vatican II. The Documents of the Council had beautiful things to say but were lost in the way they were so poorly conveyed. Nevertheless, God continues His Faithfulness to His Church – the gates of hell will not prevail. In the end Mary’s Immaculate Heart will Triumph for She was in His Plan from the beginning. 🙂
