My wife and I have been friends with a couple for many years
The usband had been a JW many years ago but drifted away for various reasons. He has recently returned
He has started to send us literature although he knows I am a devout Catholic
should I actively try to evangelize him
I’m afraid to destroy the relationship

If it were me, I think I would tell him that although I understand that he feels he possesses the truth , that I too, as a Catholic Christian believe that the Catholic Church possesses the Truth and have ample evidence to support my beliefs. That if he wishes to continue to share his literature with me then I would in turn expect that he would allow me to share my literature with him. ( He probabily won’t as it is not allowed) . But anyhow you have put it out there and he will either take you up on it (not likely) or stop.

It’s my understanding that they are forbidden to take any literature from anyone save the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society.

So gather up a few copies of Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Truth and offer to swap with him.

Or just tell him you aren’t interested, and ask him as a friend to respect your wishes. This is what I did with a friend an neighbor, and to his credit he hasn’t proselytised me again. Since I’m in his ‘area’, I also get the extra bonus of few visits from other JWs.

A lot of people are unaware that the Tract Society is first and foremost a publishing company [said to be one of the world’s largest] It requires members to buy the literature, which they then re-sell. This is how the parent church makes it’s money, and why it’s members are so insistant on selling it.

Well, if you try to evangelise, probably you will lose him as a friend. So maybe as suggested above, expect him to read some other literature too? There is this one site - www.towerwatch.com - which is run by ex JW

If he’s back in deep, you’re going to lose him as a good friend anyway. Dedicated JWs do not keep “bad associations” and as a devout Catholic, you’d fit that bill.

His poor wife - where is she in all of this? It’s HER I’d arm with literature… althought that is dicey… you don’t want to get in the middle of their marriage.

There is no reason why you can’t calmly speak with your friend and explain that you are a committed Catholic. If he wants to discuss it, then look up online how to respond, and don’t be ashamed to do so, in peace.

If he wants to discuss it and you do so calmly, it is his problem if he decides not to be your friend. We are not to be ashamed of the truth and be fearful of losing friends, as long as we treat others with respect.

I could not ever understand how Jehovah Witness can call themselves a Christian Church, since they really don’t have pastors persay. They all go by what their Magazine company tell them what they should and should believe in. They don’t believe in Christ persay as being the son of God. The don’t believe in Christmas,Easter or in Birthdays because they believe it is all pagon teachings. Like Protestants they take quotes from the Bible out of context.The way I look at them is being a kind of Jewish sect. with their own beliefs:shrug:

Except the Jews were God’s chosen people and they can trace their history back to Abraham. The JW’s can only go back to the late 1880’s and that crazy lunatic Charles Russell who was chosen by nobody. What a totally misguided bunch.

I feel sorry for them.
