the witness’ claim that “Jehovah” comes from the Hebrew translation of “Yaweah”. Is this true?

Its is actually a transliteration from the Greek. The Hebrew of the OT had neither vowels nor accomodation for them. When the Hellenistic Jews translated the Hebrew OT into Greek for the benefit of the Alexandrian Jews who could not read or speak Hebrew, they used Greek vowels to pad the pronounciation out the Hebrew words.

Yahweh = YHWH Greek translation = JHVH

Now take the vowels from the Greek word for Lord; Adonai.
( Ah - Oh - Ah simplified.)

J - Ah - H - Oh - V - Ah - H
Jahovah/Jehovah

Jehovah is a made up nonsense word made by combining the consonants from one word Jahweh, with the vowells from a completely different word Adonai.

The Jews were so frightened of using The Lords’ name in vain that they combined Yahweh & Adonai and had the word “Jehovah” in place of Gods’ name in their scriptures. It was ignorant protestants that translated this word literally & call God “Jehovah”.

Sounds to me like they worship a false god, which is understandable since most of them worship the Bible.

My sister who has been studying the JW’s for only about 8 months now makes arguments from that fact. She keeps saying that scholars around the world have studied that and out of “Yaweah” comes “Jehovah”. I don’t know what to believe?

Have your sister ask the JWs when the “name” Jehovah was used for the first time in history. They have it documented in their own publications that this was first used sometime after the 1200s by a Catholic monk. Jehovah is a latinized form of the combination that the other posters are talking about (Yahweh and Adonai). God’s name was never pronounced this way by either Jesus or the Apostles. This is why it does not appear in any Greek manuscripts in existence of the New Testament. The JWs attempt to “restore” the name back into their translation of the NT by using Hebrew translations that were made from the Greek manuscripts (the earliest which dates after the 1000s AD).

This is what our Priest, who studied in Rome, said about the name Jehovah in our RCIA class. His teaching carries more more weight than than JW’s who rise to positions of authority in the Watchtower Society without ANY formal religious training whatsoever. The vast majority have not gone to college or a seminary of any sort let alone studied Hebrew or Greek. Those that have positions of authority elders, district overseers or Bethel worker (publishing the literature) do so ONLY because they cooperate 100% with the Watchtower Society. It’s a cult, pure and simple.

The Jehovah’s Witness biblical translation is one of the most abhorrent, abominable, and blatantly reckless translations in existence.

This is true, but keep in mind that they are not at fault. They have been taught to use that translation.

Is God so cruel as to damn someone who sincerely searches for Him?

What is more troubling than the preference of the word “Jehovah” over the more accurate “Yahweh” is the appearance of “Jehovah” some 227 times in the New Testament of the New World Translation. There is NO ancient Greek manuscript of the New Testament that supports it.

Some other points to keep in mind, Cntrystr42;

Colossians 3:17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus
Q - In whose name are we to do “all”? What does “all” mean?

Acts 4:12 There is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name (Jesus’) under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved
Q- What is the name by which we are saved?

Phillipians 2;9,10 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on HIm the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow…
Q- In whose name will every knee bow? Who has the name that is above every name?

Hope this helps.
