And the schism continues…

THORNY TOPIC: U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan met Friday with a roundtable of activists and community leaders to discuss stem cell research, following up on last week’s House passage of a stem cell bill that Carnahan co-sponsored. The group that met Friday at the Missouri Botanical Garden was looking at how to promote the issue in our region. At the meeting, the Rev. Larry Biondi of St. Louis University said: “I am not a delicate person, but I am in a delicate situation” with the Vatican on the stem cell issue. Biondi supports the research. Also at the table: Jennifer Lodge, also from SLU; and from Washington U. were Dr. William Peck; Pam Lokker; Theodore Cicero; Dr. Jeff Crippin; and Dr. Steve Teitelbaum. Attorneys Andy Hoyne and Jason Zellers with Armstrong Teasdale, which does work in the biotech industry, were also there, as was Joan D’Ambrose with the St. Louis Alzheimer’s Association; Bob Soutier, president of the St. Louis Labor Council; and Tom George, chancellor of UMSL.

fix:
A Jesuit who dissents? What a surprise.
The poor priest is in a “delicate” situation. But for those rasing families in the Church amongst the wolves of dissent, they must put up or shut up.

It’s easy for an older person to oppose abortion and same-sex marriage as those don’t really affect him or her. But, stem cell research is another thing as such research may be of benefit to the older person.

It is not unlike the situation where a legislator was asked why he always voted more funds to improve prisons but was stingy in his votes for school funds. He answered,“What are the chances of me going back to school?”

Self interest is a powerful motivator, and it is a good reason why Evangelicals, who strongly oppose abortion and oppose same-sex marriage even more so, have in many cases, endorsed stem cell reseach.

So, you are saying these types are more concerned for their secular lives, than their immortal soul?

I’d like to see some examples of this. I know James Dobson does not support embryonic stem cell research. Remeber that the Church DOES support stem cell research that does not involve killing a discrete embryo.

Okay, he’s one of those who doesn’t. I’m sorry I don’t have the exact reference, but I read an article that noted that growing numbers of Evangelicals are backing embryonic stem cell research, precisely because they are no longer equating it with abortion because of its possible health benefits to the aged. It is somewhat akin to birth control among those folks. Very few Evangelicals oppose it because of the seeming good to be had from having the ability to control the size of one’s family.

Yes, the Church still holds the line on this matter.

The logical fallacy you described is why I was interested in the source. Sounds like there might be some “noise” in the article. But let me know if you find it because I would like to point out to them their inconsistency and how it doesn’t measure up.

Who is the bishop for St Louis diocese? What is his email address? Let’s ask him to remove the Jesuit from communion.

Ani: I did not find their e-mail, but here are their addresses. I suspect one is the Archbishop and the other is the Bishop:

**Most Reverend Raymond L. Burke
**4445 Lindell Blvd.
St. Louis, MO. 63108-2497
Most Reverend Robert J. Hermann
4445 Lindell Blvd.
St. Louis, MO. 63108-2497

Bishop Burke is excellent.

Ani Ibi:
An email should also be sent to the Cardinal Newman Society at:

preilly@cardinalnewmansociety.org
When I clicked on that link I got a web page that said that the time limit for the re-direct had been exceeded or something to that effect.

Of course, we could just cut & paste the e-dress into our e-mail clients. Another e-dress listed on the Cardinal Newman Society website is: webmaster@cardinalnewmansociety.org

BTW, Rev. Biondi seems to have a rather shaky record even prior to this idiocy of supporting “research” which includes the deliberate killing of innocent human beings as an inherent part of the process. He sold the St. Louis University Catholic teaching hospital to secular interests over the strong objections of then Archbishop (now Cardinal) Rigali.

For the last several years he has also allowed the hosting of the infamous Vagina Monologues and now this. It’s all very sad.

The link for Bishop Burke works though and that is the most important one. I got a reply stating that my email had been passed along to Bishop Burke. Wow! A reply! That’s gotta be a record.
