THORNY TOPIC: U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan met Friday with a roundtable of activists and community leaders to discuss stem cell research, following up on last week’s House passage of a stem cell bill that Carnahan co-sponsored. The group that met Friday at the Missouri Botanical Garden was looking at how to promote the issue in our region. At the meeting, the Rev. Larry Biondi of St. Louis University said: “I am not a delicate person, but I am in a delicate situation” with the Vatican on the stem cell issue. Biondi supports the research. Also at the table: Jennifer Lodge, also from SLU; and from Washington U. were Dr. William Peck; Pam Lokker; Theodore Cicero; Dr. Jeff Crippin; and Dr. Steve Teitelbaum. Attorneys Andy Hoyne and Jason Zellers with Armstrong Teasdale, which does work in the biotech industry, were also there, as was Joan D’Ambrose with the St. Louis Alzheimer’s Association; Bob Soutier, president of the St. Louis Labor Council; and Tom George, chancellor of UMSL.
