“Cloud Computing” is the latest buzz-word in professional computing IT departments, and OpenStack is the hot, new cloud environment.

I came across this article on InfoWorld’s website (a respected journal for IT professionals). I did a bit of a double-take when I read this (near the middle of the article, beneath “Momentum vs. adoption”):
Real live OpenStack customers are hard to find, but I was able to interview one early evaluator who gave OpenStack a try and was left nonplussed. “We don’t know what happened,” Father Ballecer grumped on a phone call. He’s the National Director of Vocation Promotion for the Jesuit Conference and the “Digital Jesuit” founder of TheTechStop; he’s heavily involved in IT decision-making for the Catholic Church.
“We’re testing these guys for things like moderate scalability, price-performance, maintenance capabilities, and long-term relevance,” said Ballecer. “But when we ran workloads across our OpenStack test bed, we crashed the whole stack. That’s not even supposed to be possible in a cloud model. We still don’t know whether it was something in the code because it’s beta or whether we set something up wrong.”
Father Bellecer is right - one of the main aspects of a computing cloud is you’re not supposed to be able to crash it! But it buckled and collapsed under the weight of Jesuit workloads!

I guess workloads get pretty big for an Order that secretly controls the world!

WOW!! I work for USDA and we operate with a “cloud” system for emailings…and those are no small bit of information…no way to even count how many useless bits of information get thrown at us per day…and I’ve never heard of “crashing the cloud”! To me it’s proof that the Jesuits are really trying to take over the world.

To me it’s proof that the Jesuits are really trying to take over the world.
And, on TheTechShop (the site that Fr. Bellecer founded), I see that the lead article is currently, “Should the government kill Homosexuals,” which is critical of the views of a Bible-believing pastor in North Carolina. More proof that the Jesuits are behind the homosexual agenda! :bigyikes:

Actually, all kidding aside, TheTechShop looks like a pretty interesting site (if you’re a geek). It’s operated by The Center for Apostolic Technology. Show of hands - how many people here even knew there was such a thing as The Center for Apostolic Technology??? They’re tucked away in the University Catholic Center in Hawaii. According to the site, they
operate under the mandate of seeking new means and methods for using Information Technology for the betterment of the individual, the building of communities, and the mission of the Church in a modern world.
Cool.

and I’ve never heard of “crashing the cloud”!
For what it’s worth, Netflix (whose streaming videos are estimated to consume more than 30% of all internet bandwidth at times) moved their whole datacenter into the cloud (using Amazon’s AWS infrastructure). I’m pretty sure that AWS has never crashed.

Netflix can’t take down a cloud, but a Jesuit priest can!
