A friend of mine wants to know if Jesus was buried for three days, then how could he be risen on Sunday if buried on Friday? He also wants to know if there is any factual knowledge of Friday being the day Jesus died.
Thank you
Hi groovygroovy,
I’m guessing you are referring to the “Sign of Jonah”, where Jesus said he’ll spend three days and three nights in the “depths of the earth” (Mt 12:40). There are two explanations to this; one I don’t subscribe to, and the other I do.
# 1: Some people reckon that part of the day counts as a full day. Somehow, this is too convenient for me.
# 2: This is the reasoning that I like. The “depths of the earth” doesn’t mean being buried; but rather, it means suffering for our sin. This started on the Thursday night when Judas betrayed Him, and Peter denied Him. In fact, 10 times in the gospels, Jesus talks about the “three days” and every time it begins with him being handed over to the authorities…
Matthew 16:21 - … “I must go to Jerusalem and
suffer much from the elders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law. I will be put to death, but
three days later I will be raised to life.”
Matthew 17:22-23 - … “The Son of Man is about to be
handed over to men who will kill him; but
three days later he will be raised to life.”…
Matthew 20:18-19 - … “[T]he Son of Man will be
handed over to the chief priests and the teachers of the Law. They will condemn him to death and then hand him over to the Gentiles, who will make fun of him, whip him, and crucify him; but
three days later he will be raised to life.”
Mark 8:31 - … "The Son of Man must suffer much and be
rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law. He will be put to death, but
three days later he will rise to life.
Mark 9:31 - “The Son of Man will be
handed over to men who will kill him.
Three days later, however, he will rise to life.”
Mark 10:33-34 - … “[T]he Son of Man will be
handed over to the chief priests and the teachers of the Law. They will condemn him to death and then hand him over to the Gentiles, who will make fun of him, spit on him, whip him, and kill him; but
three days later he will rise to life.”
Luke 9:22 - … “The Son of Man must suffer much and be
rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law. He will be put to death, but
three days later he will be raised to life.”
Luke 18:32-33 - “He will be
handed over to the Gentiles, who will make fun of him, insult him, and spit on him. They will whip him and kill him, but
three days later he will rise to life.”
Luke 24:7 - “The Son of Man must be
handed over to sinful men, be crucified, and
three days later rise to life.”
Luke 24:46 - … “This is what is written: the Messiah
must suffer and must rise from death
three days later…”
