Just a thought my friends that has hit me as I prepare for Holy Mass tomorrow:
In the Gospel, Jesus talks about living water he will give that quenches spiritual thirst as opposed to eartlhy water that of course temporarily quenches physical thirst.
Jn:4:10-15 Jesus answered and said to her: If thou didst know the gift of God and who he is that saith to thee: Give me to drink; thou perhaps wouldst have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. 11 The woman saith to him: Sir, thou hast nothing wherein to draw, and the well is deep. From whence then hast thou living water? 12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank thereof, himself and his children and his cattle?13 Jesus answered and said to her: Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: but he that shall drink of the water that I will give him shall not thirst for ever. 14 But the water that I will give him shall become in him a fountain of water, springing up into life everlasting. 15 The woman said to him: Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw. (DRV)
Of course we have a confirmation of this in the book of Revelation Rv:21:6: And he said to me: It is done. I am Alpha and Omega: the Beginning and the End. To him that thirsteth, I will give of the fountain of the water of life, freely. (DRV)
Ok. Now what struck me tonight was that Jesus did not say He was the water. He said he would give the water. I have searched the entire NT and no reference there to Jesus ever equating himself with being living water. He has, however, taught us that He is the Living bread come down from heaven.
*Jn:6:32-35 Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen, I say to you; Moses gave you not bread from heaven, but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is that which cometh down from heaven and giveth life to the world. 34 They said therefore unto him: Lord, give us always this bread. 35 And Jesus said to them: I am the bread of life. He that cometh to me shall not hunger: (DRV)
*Had Jesus always means to speak symbolically he would have used the same words as in John 4. Therefore, above passage from John 6 would have ended something like this: I will give the bread of life. Or he would have said somewhere in John 4 to the Samaratin woman “I am the living water” if he wanted her to draw close to her.
Jesus never muddled words. Once again in this Year of the Eucharist let us, with Mary, open our hearts to this wonder in our midst.
Just a thought I wanted to share. If I am way off let me know quick!!
(PS… I also think the suprise of the Apostles on discovering the Lord sitting chatting to this woman gives great light on the position of the Church on woman priests? Huh?)
