Jesus' last name

Did Jesus have a last name? And, if so, what was it? This might be a silly question, but I am truly curious. In the Bible, no one had a last name, they only belonged to certain families. Thanks for reading, and if I only got a giggle out of you. Then, at least I reached you.👋

In the Western World no one had a last name except the Royalty until about the time records were kept.

Robert might have been the son of a baker, he became Robert Baker.

You asked what was Jesus last name. Well I remember that the Angel told Mary the baby would be named Jesus, so He had no last name.

Simon (later Peter) had a dad named Jonah, so Simon was Simon Bar Jonah. Simon of Jonah. If I am in error, slap my hand.
 
people mistakenly think that His last name was Christ, when (as you probably know) that was actually His title. He was the Christ.

as has been pointed out, most people in those days didn’t have last names. to distiguish between different people with the same name, they would use the father’s name (like simon bar jonah) or they would use the name of the place from whence the person came. hence: mary magdalen.

these weren’t used as last names, just as designations. as such, one could say Jesus’s last name was nazerene, or Jesus of Nazareth.

and, to top it all off, we’re using the anglicization of His name, anyway. it’s really closer to Yeshua than to Jesus, if you are interested in what He was actually called.

that’s probably far more information on His name than you were bargaining for… 🙂
 
I have seen it written many times. I believe Jesus last name is ISLORD. 😉 God Bless

No really, Jesus would have been known as Y’shua Ben Josef, Jesus, the son of Joseph. He was also known as Jesus of Nazareth. The name Jesus was quite common, so they had to be distinguished one from the other.

F.Y.I., The custom of passing on exact family surnames is essentially a Norman French invention, and the Norman French
hadn’t come to be at the time.

No - I believe you are correct. Joseph and Mary were descendants of the House of David…Bar David.

Oh? What about the Roman tradition of praenomen, nomen, cognomen?

After all Gaius Julius Caesar precedes Christ by a generation or two.

Of course, this Roman tradition wasn’t adopted by the Jews (except maybe Saul/Paul who was a Roman citizen… I’m not sure).
 
Jesus’ last name was Christmas. He was the son of Mary. After all dont we all say “Mary (Merry) Christmas”?😃

Paul’s name would have been his name, followed by Bar (“son of”) followed by his father’s name. In Latin, he would have adopted the name of his patron (the Roman official who sponsored him or his father for citizenship.)

Jesus would have been called “Yeshua Bar Yoseph” meaning “Joshua” (“Jesus” is the Greek form) “Son of Joseph.” Even though He was not Joseph’s biological son, He would have carried that name.

As has been discussed in another thread on this forum the last name of the earthly Jesus was Caesar.
However, not everybody seems to be convinced here yet.

By the way, even Caesar’s last name wasn’t Caesar. “Caesar” is a cognomen, not a nomen. The family name (nomen) was Julia.

Yes, that’s correct, he came from the gens Iulii.
If you look at his whole name as it is usually written
‘Gaius Julius Caesar’ however, the last name in the row is
CAESAR.

Yes, in sequence. But when we say “last name” we really mean “family name.”

For example, Li Kwan Yu’s “last name” is Li – that’s the family name.

Jesus’ name would have been, as I said, “Yeshua Bar Yoseph.”
 
btw…i was just kidding… the bar bit was talked about already. thanks for the help, though.
