Did Mary or Jesus or both live without the physical consequences of Original Sin? Seeing as how Mary was gifted with a birth by Immaculate Conception by God and Jesus was born of her, a virgin, and the Holy Spirit.

Hi Pres,

St. Paul tells us that Jesus is like us in everything except sin. He did not enjoy freedom from sickness, physical harm and death, as Adam and Eve did. Nor did Mary.

Following their resurrection, both Jesus and Mary enjoy a glorified body, free from suffering and death and gifted with privileges like instant displacement, going through physical obstacles etc.

Does this answer your question?

Yes it does, thank you! But now I have another 🙂

Is there a reason given in the bible or by the Church that they aren’t free from the physical consequences of Original Sin despite being born without it? Or any reason you might suppose at all? I don’t assume there need to be a reason, just curious. Maybe as a way to give Jesus’ experience as a human more ‘authenticity’ for us believers…?

Hi Pres,

John Paul II spoke about this at one of his audiences. Among other things, he said,

"In his corporeal nature Jesus of Nazareth, like every man, experienced fatigue, hunger and thirst. His body was vulnerable, subject to suffering, and sensitive to physical pain. It was precisely in this flesh (sarx) that he was subjected to dreadful tortures and was eventually crucified. “He was crucified, died and was buried.”

I guess it would depend upon what you think are the physical consequences of original sin.

Spiritual consequence: We are born ‘dead’ in that we are spiritually separated from God. We also have a dependency, without God’s grace, to choose to oppose God (concupiscence). Other losses?: able to read another’s soul (such as Padre Pio and Bishop Sheen could do)

Physical consequences: loss of the preternatural gifts. But I don’t know what these are?: Long physical life. Able to bi-locate. Able to be where you want instantly.

The glorified Christ and some Saints have exhibited such gifts. Were Adam and Eve given these before original Sin or are they only available to our glorified bodies?

What in Genesis is allegorical, physical, spiritual, parable? Much is open to speculation.
