Dear Brothers and Sisters,…When He saw the crowds, He had compassion for them because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd…Mt 9:36
The Word of God does not mention Mary in that crowd but in verse 37, Jesus speaks to His disciples so we may assume she was there. Since Matthew wrote Jesus had compassion on the crowd, certainly, Mary His Mother could see and hear the compassion of Jesus her Son, even more deeply than Matthew did, but are we moved with the compassion of Jesus as Mary was when we hear the Word of God?
How are we moved by the compassion of Jesus for the crowds around us, or even by family members, neighbors and friends who seem to be so harassed and helpless like sheep without a shepherd? The Lord said to his disciples in the next verse:
Mary surely prayed, obeying the words of her Son, and I think many of the disciples prayed too. Later – after His Passion, Death and Resurrection, before His Ascension, Jesus gave His disciples a further command:The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest… Mt. 9:37
Mary and the disciples prayed together in the upper room waiting for power from the Holy Spirit and on Pentecost, the Fire of His Loving Compassion so filled the Church that 3000 souls received His Word through Peter and were baptized. The Church carries on the care of souls today through clergy and laity. Each of us, baptized into Christ as Priest, Prophet and King, is called to carry on the “shepherding of His sheep”. The Church, as Pope Paul VI wrote, exists to evangelize. The Church is sent to continue Christ’s Mission, His Compassion in the world. Mary and the disciples heard and did the Truth they heard. By God’s Grace may we do the same. All authority in heaven and earth has been given to Me. God therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo I am with you always, to the close of the age. Mt 28:18-20
