I just purchased this (the six hour classic on the life of Jesus by Zeffirelli) for under $20 from Amazon.

Excellent movie with a lot of good insight. A must have for every home.

Here is the Amazon.com Link to the 2 DVD set .

Enjoy

Thanks for the link to this excellent film. Now that VHS is dying, it’s great to be able to replace tapes with DVDs for no more/less than we paid for the tapes, whenever possible. 👍

I’ve had it for some time. I was always impressed with Robert Powell’s performance and wondered at how much he chose to undergo for the part. Similar to James Cavaziel in the Passion of the Christ.

For families, this movie would be an excellent Lenten family activity, watching an hour each week over six weeks, pausing to discuss periodically.

That’s my favorite movie!!! In fact I’m watching it on chapters, depending on the time I have.Last night I stopped it after Jesus cures the blind man,Jesus accuses the priests of hypocrites, and he ends his speech with “You shall never see me here again!! Not untill you learn to cry, Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, for my Father and I are one and the same.” That’s one of my favorite parts of that cinematographic masterpiece.👍

This film was actually a TV series and was longer than the edited version (which I have). I remember when it was about to be filmed and there was a bit of an outcry because Robert Powell was living with a girl. People thought someone playing Jesus shouldn’t. Anyhow he got married soon after and is still married to her!

My very favorite movie. I own on dvd and vhs. My husband bought the dvd so I can use it at school to show parts to the students. I love that movie.

I found some bible studies and topical lesson plans from Ignatius press that use this 3-part video, I would like to get in in DVD to make it easier to navigate, plus the video is getting worn out we use it so much. I went through and marked scenes that relate to mysteries of the rosary one time, and sometimes us it for that as well.

I know there are comparisons between James Cavaziel’s experiences during the filming of the Passion and Robert Powell’s performance in this miniseries. Does anyone else know of these?

I liked this film. Used it, in small bites, for several years for Inquiry classes.

I especially like the ending where Peter rests his head on Christ’s shoulder asking Jesus to stay with them a bit longer and Jesus looks directly into the camera and says that He is with them/us always even until the end of time.

I believe and I may be wrong, but I think that the International Rosary which appears on EWTN uses some of the clips-still shots from the movie- Jesus of Nazareth. Anyone else notice this?

I agree. Growing up, this movie was an integral part of Holy Week for me. It would always start playing on Palm Sunday night and continue for the next 3 nights and we would make a point to be home to watch it. It helped me better understand what was taking place at the services of the Easter Triduum.

I loved Robert Powell as Jesus and Olivia di Hussi (spelling?) as Mary.

Also, the music of this movie is phenomenal. It’s almost like a soundtrack for The New Testament.

Robert Powell who played Christ was interviewed for a TV chat show a number of years and he said that if he was paid everytime that Jesus of Nazareth was shown around the world he would have been a millionaire 10 times over.
