Jesus Paid It All: Biblical Support for Penance

Many non-Catholics frequently struggle with the idea of penance because they can’t quite grasp how you can be forgiven and still held responsible – after all, the sacrifice of Christ was sufficient for all of our sins. I’m wondering if this verse would help make the point, though, that God expects us to participate in the process. This verse refers to Moses and others, but spells out that while they were forgiven, they still received punishment.

“You answered them, O LORD our God; You were to them God-Who-Forgives, Though You took vengeance on their deeds.”

I think its a good one. But you’re preaching to the choir. Whenever I produce something like that they say, “We don’t go by the Old Testament.”

The one I usually bring up is the one about David and Nathan. You have been forgiven but the infant must die.

the sacrifice of Christ was sufficient for all of our sins.

The trouble is, that there are two categories of sins.

Pre Baptism - All sins are washed away
Post Baptism - Sins are forgiven and absolved, but the temporal penalty of the sin remains.
