Jesus Questions

Not sure if this is being posted in the right place, but I have some questions about Jesus.

1. What did Jesus change? Did he overturn parts of the old testament? If a first century observant Jew became a Christian, how did his life and behavior change?
2. When did the Sabbath day change to Sunday?
3. Jesus was supposed to be in the tomb for 3 days, but it doesn’t look like 3 days to me when I read the Bible!

Well as an answer to #3 Jesus rose from the dead on the THIRD day. This doesn’t mean that Jesus rose from the dead precisely 72 hours later.

Day 1: Jesus Dies
Day 2: Saturday
Day 3: Easter Sunday (Jesus is resurrected)

Remember, Jesus came not to abolish the law, but to fulfill it (Matthew 5:17). I recommend reading Acts of the Apostles as it shows how the early Church wrestled with these sorts of questions. Many of the levitical and deuteronomic laws (dietary restrictions, etc.) were set aside because they no longer applied after Jesus’ saving act.

1. When did the Sabbath day change to Sunday?

We can see even in Acts that they celebrated the “breaking of the bread” on the "first day of the week (Acts 20:7). This was because Jesus rose on the first day of the week.

1. Jesus was supposed to be in the tomb for 3 days, but it doesn’t look like 3 days to me when I read the Bible!

praise_Jesus answered this already. I will add that we need to take care not to impose our 21st century understanding on a 1st century text.

Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament and established a new one

a first century observant Jew wouldn’t have to change much because Jesus is the Messiah they have been waiting for. some accepted him, some didn’t

it didn’t. Sunday is not considered a Sabbath day, Saturday is still the Sabbath. early Christians used to go to the Temple or Synagouge on Saturdays and then celebrate the Lord’s Supper on Sundays. this is until there was so much backlash from the Jews of the time that they made it mandatory for those who enter the Temple and the Synagogues to renounce Jesus. of course the Christians wouldn’t do that, so they stopped observing the Sabbath

the concept of time for Jews are different to how to count time today. its quite possible that Jesus was in the tomb for a little over 24 hours

day 1, Jesus died on the cross at around 3pm. he has to be burred before the sun sets because for Jews, the new day begins when the sun sets (or the current day ends when the sun completely sets). so by that evening it was already the Sabbath, a new day for them, so its day 2

next morning the sun rises and then sets later in the day, thats day 2

as soon as the sun sets on day 2, its the beginning of day 3. so if the sun sets at 6:30pm and Jesus rose at 6:31, then he would have been in the tomb a total for 27.5 hours. but for Jews, they count those as 3 days
