So, I am sitting here and was reading the gospel (mainly Mark and Luke) and was gazing at Luke 9:18-21. It follows the feeding of the 5,000.This is where Jesus asks Peter and the disciples who the crowds think he is. When Peter replies “the Messiah” it is said Jesus rebukes him and tells them not to tell anyone that. What is the interpretation of that verse? I realize that by this point Jesus had already proclaimed that John was the one who scripture said would prepare the way. So, in what context is this verse to be taken. I know in Rabbi Jesus, by Bruce Chilton, he believes that Jesus was trying to avoid capture (if I remember correctly) but Chilton’s book isn’t exactly orthodox.

I guess passages like this are the prime example why we need a teaching magisterium!

And yes, it’s New Year’s Eve and I’m sitting hear reading the Bible. My wife’s a doc. and on call tonight so it’s me and the kiddies!🤓

Yes, it was not time for Jesus to die. I think it was 6 months later that he did die, as the time of the event was the Day of Atonement.

Just look at what happened when Jesus finally did accept the title, The Christ, in public when he entered triumphantly in Jerusalem. He died 5 days later.

God Bless!

Tim Gray in his book *Mission of the Messiah * says this messianic secret was kept to keep the Roman authorities of Jesus’ back until it was time for Him to die.

Peter’s strong confident confession that Jesus is “the Messiah of God” begs a question. Does Peter really know what the Messiah of God is supposed to look like and what his true mission would be?

Peter’s later rebuke from Jesus when he tells Jesus “God Forbid” that Jesus should have to suffer and die indicates that Peter did not really know why Jesus was the Messiah even though he was factually correct.

Because (according to footnotes I’ve read) there were wide spread false ideas about the coming Messiah, Jesus must have felt it best that he not be connected to that title by the masses until everyone really knew what he stood for, which would not happen until after his death and resurrection.

That is how I understand that passage.
