In both the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds, it says that He rose again after having descended into hell. Under what circumstances did He descend the first time? I am unaware of any scriptural reference to this (which certainly doesn’t mean there isn’t one). Can anyone help? Thanks!

The word “again” doesn’t mean all over again in this context. You are reading too much into this one word. All it means is that he was dead and rose again–in other words, he rose up after being dead.

As to Jesus descending to hell, the word hell here doesn’t mean the hell of the damned but the place of the righteous souls of the OT. He opened the gates of heaven for them and went to them to lead them there. He only did this once. 🙂

Think of it like this: A man was walking down the street. He tripped on a rock and got up again.

This should not imply that he fell once before.🙂
