About two weeks ago, I started about 3-4 threads, and I got many more responses than I anticipated. Well, this week was Homecoming week and as a member of Student Council, I was very busy with the week’s events. I was not able to got on-line to respond to everyone. I read one of the threads that I began, start to finish. Here are the main ideas of your responses:
  1. I started a post and then ran from the responses.
  2. I am a liar.
  3. I only seek to destroy the Catholic Church.
  4. I have no interest in learning the real Truth.
  5. I am misinformed.
  6. I have not done my research.
  7. I don’t know what I’m talking about.
  8. I only start posts to set traps for anyone who answers them.
  9. I am ridiculous and my friends are either fictional or stupid.
I will tell you all the truth. I won’t lie or twist words.
  1. I didn’t run from the responses, I am an honors student with little time during the week. The past week was Homecoming week, and I was busy. I’m sorry I did not respond with the celerity you were anticipating.
  2. I am not a liar. If I said anything untrue, it is because I was misinformed or I genuinely mistaken. I never intentionally lied to anyone on this site.
  3. I do not want to ruin the Catholic church. I want answers. I am starting to see the accuracy in some responses and I have a more or less favorable position to the church.
  4. I want to learn the real truth, and I realize I don’t have all of the right answers. I was staring to feel as though I could trust you to help me.
  5. I may be misinformed. I won’t lie. My friends may be wrong, and others I have talked to may be wrong as well.
  6. Some people have suggested that I look things up on-line before I say anything. Perhaps I should do more extensive research, but I don’t like to do it on-line as information may be incorrect.
  7. May of you say I don’t know what I am talking about. I think I do, but then again, everyone thinks that they know the right answers. I am willing to admit when I am wrong.
  8. maybe this is somewhat true. I don’t really know. If I have, I am sorry.
  9. I don’t appreciate being called ridiculous. Maybe you feel that way, and if so, please pray for me instead of telling me that I am ridiculous. Please be considerate of my feelings.
I don’t want this to be self-righteous or anything of that nature. Please take this in a sincere way.

God’s Peace~

All that I can offer, friend is:

We all have times with our foot in our mouths. There are trolls here, and it was unfortuante what happened. A lesson for all of us.

Lisa, some people responded too quickly and did not think about what they were saying. I apologize. Please do not leave, this place is a good place to learn.🙂

JesusFreak I’m sorry you had such a negitive experience. What is hard for some outside the Catholic church to know is that for the past 30 years + (appx) Catholics have been very poorly taught what the teachings of the church are. So many Catholics don’t know what the Church teaches and many get it wrong. Those of us that do know (if we’re younger most of us searched on our own) are constantly on the “battlefield” trying to defend the many misconceptions those that are not Catholic often have (and some that are in the church.)

I would recommend the Catechism of the Catholic church
nccbuscc.org/catechism/text/
for accurate information on the church. Catholic Answers website is also a great resource.

Many of us who continuely have to defend our faith sometimes get defensive. Even if it’s the 1st time you’ve asked it I can assure you for many of us it’s the 100th time we’ve heard it and sometimes people forget to be (unfortunately) charitable in our response.

I myself have two coworkers-one a fundementalist baptist and one a proclaimed Catholic, both put my on the defensive on a daily basis. Sometimes I get so heated I sound like a raving lunatic :banghead: , not great for evangelization.

Catholics that are able to defend the faith are a rare breed but we’re working to change that. Please don’t give up asking questions. And try not to take personally some of the less then charitable responses - I know it’s hard. As Christians we are all part of the body of Christ and called to love each other. It is very good for to remind us that we often fall short. God Bless you.

p.s. I’ll keep you in my prayers and I hope you’ll keep me in yours. :gopray:

A reminder to all that this media has it’s limitations. While it’s a good way to share info, there’s no way to gauge facial expression or voice inflection, and the anonymity sometimes tends to encourage a churlishness that one might not dream of having in “real life.”

Hurry back, JF16. We do like questions here. After all, this place is called Catholic Answers 🙂

Dear Lisa,

I know that I have accused you of dishonesty. Please forgive me.

If there is anything I can ever answer, please feel free to post your questions here.

I would recommend three books to you.

These two deal specifically with those beliefs which are distinctively Catholic:

Catholic and Christian, by Alan Schreck

and

Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic, by David Currie

And this one, which is an overview of all the Church’s teaching:

Catholic Christianity, by Peter Kreeft

May God bless you,
Justin

I am very glad you sought your answers here, I rarely post, but have read all your threads thoroughly. One suggestion I would like to make that would cut down on the negative responses would be to carefully word your questions. Some of the ways you directed your questions did indeed strike me as condescending. Someone already said it earlier in this post, but it is extremely difficult to read into someone typed words what the exact intention of that individual is. I think it is imperative for everyone to remember that.

I hope you find the answers that you seek, and continue to make God a priority!

Very good advice. I have also realized this in my responses and I have decided to be more delicate in my responses, to reply in kind of a WWJD mindset. Thanks, and once again, I am sincerely sorry about all of this.

JesusFreak16 I would like to say something to you with all due respect.

You should have taken the time to think through what you were doing here in starting threads.

NOW we all know that you were involved with your school’s homecoming festivities since you told us after the fact.

But we did not know that before you told us. All we saw was someone coming in starting a lot of threads and then dissapearing, we did no know about your busy-ness with other things and so we assumed that you were a troll.

In future if you know that you will be busy and not able to get back for a while do tell us so in advance. I think that will go far in helping mutual understanding.

Please do stay around and continue asking questions.

.
the problem is right there. we assumed . i’m not going to repeat what happens when we assume . even if some one is a troll, why can’t we just answer the questions honestly and charitably? if nothing else it is good practice.

Hmmm… It depends on the type of troll.

Bashers should be answered honestly, charitably if within reason.

Attention parasites should be identified and ignored.

Lisa,

Glad you stuck it out and came back with answers. We are not all great writers here and as such can easily mis-interpret what is being said. Sometimes the tone of the question invites a certain response too. Sometimes the tone of the response is unwarrented. So many come here and make outrages claims or comments that some members react too quickly to other members that ment no harm.

Remember to have Love in all you say and do. Remeber that we are all sinners too and I will never cast the first stone. (or should that be ROCK since a stone is nothing but a little peable?😉 )

Anyway, come here to enjoy and to learn and to share your faith with us while we share ours with you. People have good days and bad days and that sometimes comes out in our posts.

One thing you should learn to help in life is to stay open minded and get a thick skin. An open mind can lead to ignorent people becomeing educated. A thick skin will give you the ability to persevere when times are tough though the end is good.

See you around.

Lisa,

If you read the above posts you’ll see that about all that can be said Has been said.

Yes we have heard all the attacks on the Roman Catholic Church many times for many years. When we hear the same attack again there is a tendancy to be abrupt. You certainly can understand that!

I have read what is a condescending attitude on your part. If you ask an honest question without adding that little slap in the face to us, it would be more profitable. The “Have you stopped beating your wife” questions often get a negative response.

You can get a Catechism of the Catholic Church at Walmarts for about $9.00. Use the index for a start. It will answer many of your questions. But if you read it with a prejudiced mind it is incommbent upon you to be able to refute the Catechism, right?

I was one of the first to call you a troll. Really sorry.
Yeah I really should’ve observed and posted here and there before I started even one thread. I am new to the term “troll” and I now know what it means. If I had known what a troll was, I would’ve made sure that no one would think of me as a troll. I was just really excited with all of these forums, and I really am interested in learning the Truth. So yeah no hard feelings… I would think I was a troll, too 😃

God’s Peace~

Yes, I can understand, especially since I’m a teenager and I go to a public school where Christianity as a hole is looked on with cynicism.

Yes, I have gone back and I sounded pretty bad. I have decided to be more careful in the future.

Imagine the way you would read Luther’s Catechism or some other Protestant one, and that is most likely the way I will read the Catholic Catechism .
