When Jesus was on earth did he establish all the dogmas and ordinaces of the Catholic church? Did he perfom all the traditions?

May I ask whether or not you’re Catholic or Protestant?

I’m guessing Protestant, but I want to make sure.

I have never been to a church. I have only read from different churches, groups. Recently, I had a life changing experience that has lead me to consume upwards of 40 hrs a week of reading the bible. I have read it from beginning to end and I’m over half way through reading it again.

I can understand many of the reasonings of the Catholic church. Like separate writings in addition to the bible.

It would seem like Christians would have interpretations of the bible and have written these interpretations down, like the Catholic church which has explanations of things already established.

Sometimes in the bible different verses can appear to have opposite meanings, but in the context of the entire bible there are no contradictions and it greatly benefits everyone to have people who have studied these things already.

SK88,

Since you’re in fact finding mode, I would recommend that you keep reading from valid sources and consider seeking out your local Catholic Church to talk with someone that can help you find out out their RCIA classes. A lot of people think it’s the Catholic Church’s way of “sucking you in”, but if you make your intentions known up front and go into the classes with an open mind and heart, you’ll get a lot more out of program. More information on RCIA is at:

catholic.com/library/How_to_Become_a_Catholic.asp

Also, spend some time reviewing the Catechism if you’re up for it. An online version is available at the following address, but the hardbound copy is much easier to navigate. It can be overwhelming for a non-Catholic or a “Cafeteria Catholic”, but you may find it useful.

Reading the bible is good, but you might find that it’s all a little confusing until you can put some type of framework around it and get a little boost from God and the Holy Spirit in how to read scripture. A little prayer and time in God’s house never hurts along with some good books on conversion stories that you can possible relate to. 😉

God Bless and Good luck on your journey. My wife is on her own journey and it’s wonderful when she starts asking the right questions.

Cheers,

Ahhh, I see. I should apologize then. I thought at first you were an angry Protestant trying to “prove” the Church wrong. It was uncharitable of me to assume that and I do apologize.

I’m afraid I’m not really the person to ask though. You’d need more of a theologian to explain all of this. The dogmas are the Church have always been around (“always” as in "since Jesus’s time), the Church just made sure to define them as dogmas.

The Catholic Church was founded by Christ himself. All of the traditions and teachings of the Church stem from the Bible. We were founded at Pentecost. Our Bishops are the direct successors of the Apostles.

Here are a couple of excellent links from an excellent website called “fallible blogma” if you want further reading. I reccomend also looking at the comments at the bottom of the page-oftentimes the discussion is as interesting (if not more interesting) than the article itself. These articles should clear up many of your questions.

Sorry for all the links, but these are all easy reads that do a really superb job of teaching the Faith.

I hope you find the Truth.

When Jesus was on earth did he establish all the dogmas and ordinaces of the Catholic church? Did he perfom all the traditions?
Jesus established the basics of the faith. think of it this way, in the US there is the Constitution. the Constitution is the basis of all laws. any state, county or city can enact new laws, but these laws should not violate the Constitution. the same with the Church, dogmas and doctrines were defined later, but none of these are to go against the original teaching of Jesus.

When Jesus was on earth did he establish all the dogmas and ordinaces of the Catholic church? Did he perfom all the traditions?
Yes and no.

Look, I am a math teacher. I expect my students to be able to do problems that are more or less like what we do in class.

If they can take it further, then great. But the minimum anyone can reasonably expect me to pass on to them is the basics that they will need for the rest of their lives.

Now I say that Jesus was no worse than me at teaching.

Therefore everything necessary for salvation has alredy been settled by the Catholic Church, both teachings and rituals.

When Jesus was on earth did he establish all the dogmas and ordinaces of the Catholic church? Did he perfom all the traditions?
No, He didn’t - we know this because He specifically told the Apostles that after He returned to the Father, He would send the Holy Spirit to “remind them” of what He had taught and “tell them” everything they would need to know. It is this promise that gives the Church the Apostolic Authority to continue the ministry of Jesus down through the centuries.

The “deposit of faith” doesn’t change, but the ways that it intersects with our lives is obviously different in different times and places. So there are traditions (lower-case t) and Traditions that have developed over time under the guidance of the Spirit (and others that developed which were rejected under the guidance of the Spirit . . .)

These are just a selection…

If you want a book with these in them…and more…it is called “Jesus, the Apostles and the Early Church” by Pope Benedict XVI…published by Ignatius Press

SK:

It might help us answer if you ask specific questions. What questions, at the moment, come to mind?

🙂

Nearly every teaching of the Catholic Church can be demonstrated implicitly or explicitly in the writings of the Apostles and those who succeeded them.

Though some items you won’t find anything explicitly written about for a few hundred years after the death of the apostles.
