I notice that Jewish New Year is approaching. I have done a little reading about it and it is fascinating–such a long history.
FYI:
It is celebrated on the New Moon on or near the day of the Autumn Equinox. It used to be celebrated on the Spring Equinox, like today’s Persian’s still do, but when God lead the Hebrews out of Egypt with Moses, he changed the celebration to the Autumn Equinox.
This year, the New Year celebration, Rosh Hashanah, starts at sundown September 8 and ends at sundown September 10. In the Jewish calendar, we are entering the year 5771.
Do Catholics acknowledge this time at all? Is there a prayer that can be said to mark the time? Anything to ask God for a good new year, etc.?
