We’ve been invited to a Jewish wedding in a couple of weeks. This is what the mother of the bride wrote:

The plan, at present, is to have the veiling of the bride (Kabalas Paanim) from about 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM followed by the actual wedding ceremony (Chuppah) at 11:30, should only take about 30 minutes. Buffet lunch, dancing and Schtick will probably last until 4:00 or 5:00. The first dance will probably be about 1:00 or 1:30.

We don’t want to stay the whole time (we have 3 little kids and wouldn’t want to impose that on them :p). Would it be acceptable to skip the Kabalas Paanim and just come for the ceremony? And what is the Schtick? Is that part of the reception? We would like to just come for the actual Chuppah. Is that acceptable?

The seating for the ceremony will be divided–men and women. Where do the children sit? In our family it works best if I sit with the baby and our eldest (both boys) while my hubby handles our 2 year old daughter. At what age are children supposed to sit with men vs. women?

Thanks for any advice you may have! 🙂

Sam, I don’t know for SURE- but I think male/female children are not separated until age 12-13? I checked my text from a Judaism course I took but couldn’t find anything on this topic.

No idea about the other questions…my one Jewish friend is verrryyyy liberal.

Maybe there’s a Jewish Answers Forum you can ask that would be more authoritative. 🙂

Thanks Lil_M! 🙂

Any Jews or former Jews here who could help me out on the other points?

The best advice has to be to ask them - I’m sure that they will explain how they want things to go at their wedding (or her daughter’s wedding in the case of the bride’s mother), you can’t be expected to know the etiquette, or what arrangements they have made about accommodating children, for example, so don’t be shy, ask.

The ‘party’ afterwards is likely to be pretty crazy (schtick is ‘performances’) and exhausting.

There is a site called Ask Moses (askmoses.com/) that may be able to help. I’ve asked them questions about Judaism before and found them quite helpful.

Would even Moses second guess a Jewish mother? 😃

Seriously, when I’ve been invited to Christian weddings where I don’t know the etiquette, I’ve asked whoever has invited me. You’ve got religious stuff, family stuff and all sorts of things going on that you can’t predict.

Nobody’s ever told me to look for a website.

I was trying to help. I’m sorry to have offended you.

Not at all offended! 🙂

I suppose I was saying that the original poster shouldn’t worry so much, just get some idea from whoever invited them about what the ‘etiquette’ of the particular wedding celebration and go along and enjoy themselves.
