I believe Isaiah states that he will judge all nations. I don’t know of anything that says he will judge nations for dividing up his land. I believe it is a reference to universal justice and peace.

Lets start with Joel 3. Please read all of Joel 3, but here are verses 1, 2, and 3.

when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem,
I will gather all nations
and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat.
There I will enter into judgment against them
concerning my inheritance, my people Israel,
for they scattered my people among the nations
and divided up my land.
They cast lots for my people
and traded boys for prostitutes;
they sold girls for wine
that they might drink.**

Now that we see it is in the bible, does it have any meaning in todays “peace” dealings?

So you had the answer all along! Although I believe you are refering to chapter 4, not 3. At least the Book of Joel that we have has these quotes in Chapter 4.

Many have both a relatively near fulfillment (not long after the prophet spoke them) and at the same time a comparatively far fulfillment (long after the prophet was in the grave).

I’d agree that some prophecies were for the immeidate future and some for the distant. Much of the message of the prophets had nothing to do with the future so much as a warning to change how we were (and are) behaving in the present. In General, the prophet is hypersensitive to the smallest and seemingly trite actions committed in day to day life – Justice for the widow and orphan, honest measures in scales (honest business practice), pride, arrogance, indifference. THese are the things that get the prophet’s goat. He or she doesn’t see things with ordinary eyes. Everything seems magnified in importance to the prophet.

Getting back to your original question, Jews believe that although there were thousands of prophets, only the words of prophets that contained a message for future generations, were written down and are part of our scriptures.

My understanding of the Christian view of prophecies, which Ex Nihlo explained to me some time ago, is that many propecies have dual meanings – one that was fulfilled rather quickly and one that referred to Jesus.
