What are your thoughts on the show Joan of Arcadia?? I’m not a fan because of bad plot, bad acting, bad music, extreme and pointless drama, etc… However- I’ve also noticed anti-Church scenes.

In one show, Joan’s mother (who doesn’t listen to her daughter, attempt to understand her, etc) has a nervous breakdown and verbally attacks a priest, asking him why God would do all this to her, why the world was so awful, the questions that a priest, of all people, should be able to offer wisdom towards… Of course, he stuttered, reaffirming the Hollywood knowledge that religion and people of faith follow God blindly and have not a wit of sense… As well, in one episode Joan thinks God wants her to have sex with her boyfriend… Hmm…

The idea of God being on earth in the form of all these different people is interesting too… I think it offers provocative food for spiritual thought (Jesus being in those around us…), however for a children and teenager show…

What are you thoughts? Do you let your kids watch it? Do you watch it yourself?

I watched it and it struck me as do most shows on television these days:aimed at teenagers (especially girls); grownups (especially men) are stupid; kids (especially teenaged females) are smart; rules are narrowminded; what one feels rules.

I’d rather watch pigs mud wrestle: It’s less predictable and is comparatively intelligent and mature.

There is already a Thread on this.

Joan of Arcadia
I havent even see this show…

God Bless

I’ve never seen it, but my husband saw one episode and said it’s awful. In the episode, there was a “hippy” character who killed herself. THe show implied that because the hippy didn’t think suicide was wrong, she went straight to heaven.

Joan of Arcadia is my favorite TV show!
I like the show and so didn’t my CCD Students…haven’t watched much of it this season though.
The writer/ producer of the show Barbara Hall, is a Catholic who was recently on a Catholic program called the “Christophers” with Mrsgr. Jim Lesante. It was quite a good interview.
God Bless, Annunciata:)

Joan’s mother had a ‘breakdown’ because she was in the seven stages of mourning but didn’t know it. The priest helped her to recognize she was mourning the death of the dreams she and her husband had for their now parapalegic 19 year old son. Because of the priest the family was able to move toward emotional healing together on that issue. That episode was meant to help people deal with the ‘bad things’ which happen in life.

In the episode Joan thought God wanted her to have sex, that was a rather logical conclusion for a teen surrounded by secular concepts about relationships to draw. Of course, when it came to the moment she realized immediately she was drawing the wrong conclusion and in the end discovered what God meant by instructing her to “give Adam a gift”. That episode reinforced not having sex outside of marriage.

I’ve watched every episode with my teen children and I cannot begin to tell you what wonderfully deep spiritual conversations we’ve had as a result. We did not discuss everyday life for teens from a spiritual perspective as much before JofA. Before then, we’d discuss it but it was more a lecture from us parents to them…now they do most of the talking. It’s been great as they’ve been preparing for confirmation.

FYI–Joan’s been cancelled.
“I think talking to ghosts may skew younger than talking to God,” CBS Chairman Leslie Moonves said Wednesday.
I worry for our youth…

I too watch the show with my daughter and we’ve only missed a few episodes. In the episode where she thought she was supposed to sleep with Adam, I must say I was a bit bothered by the mothers poor advice to her, in that she left it open, as in “well, if you didn’t want to, that’s what matters” or something to that effect. I think especially in a world that suggests that pre-marital sex is not only ok but good, that we as parents need to speak out for our children and teach them at every opportunity. I shared with my daughter how sad I was for Joan that her mother missed this teaching moment. Thankfully, my daughter agreed with me.

But actually I’m adding to this thread in the hopes that I can stir up some interest in writing to CBS asking them to reconsider the cancelation of the series. I don’t know of the most effective way of contacting them (I just used the website feedback mechanism), but the newspaper today mentioned that the fans are hoping to flood CBS with requests to keep the show alive.

Admittedly I’ve never watched an entire episode, I don’t think. I’ve seen parts.

The impression I had watching it was that God supposedly appears to Joan as different people, but that these people are “real”. In that understanding, I find the show heretical - God has only become incarnate as Jesus, not all these myriad others. But maybe I’m misunderstanding.

God does appear to Joan as different people and they are sort of “real”. I say sort of because while other people can see them, I think that’s primarily so that Joan doesn’t look like she’s talking to a lamp post or talking into space. I’ve seen most of the shows and I don’t think they mean to imply that the various “Gods” are another Incarnation, rather God just appears to Joan in a way that she can relate to and that matches her environment. For example, both “Cute Guy God” and “Goth God” appear to her at school and if I remember correctly, there was a “doctor God” when her friend was dying in the hospital.

Joan is a great show. I’ve been moved several times–not just emotionally, but spiritually. CARose, I wrote to CBS before they canceled it to urge them to keep it. I think I’ll send another note now in hopes that they’ll change their mind. I think there’s a slim chance that another network might pick it up.

I think they just announced that it hasn’t been picked up for another year.

Was I the only one wondering if she was going to be burned at the stake on the season finale? 😉

As a Catholic who watches & reads EVERYTHING with skepticism, I can often pick out the anticatholic things. I enjoyed J of A and was sad to hear it was canceled. This past season was especially catholic with the mother pursuing RCIA. I haven’t run into false teaching of the church out of the mouth of God, Priest, or RCIA teacher, but I did think that individual family members had it wrong… but that is actually true to life. There are very few shows on TV now (one less apparently) that isn’t afraid to frame life around God and His plans… especially with many allusions to the Catholic Church. I guess I’ll write CBS too. Footnote: I think my DVR is anti-Joan because it would arbitrarily “forget to record it” so I can honestly say I haven’t seen EVERY episode, but my mom has and we discuss it frequently.

HA HA! I just got it… I’m a little slow sometimes 😛 That’s great! Speaking of Season Finale… Did they have one? My mom says they just stopped and never officially ended it… not even a Series Finale.

They DID have a season finale…It seems the devil, or at least an evil adversary, arrived in Arcadia. Does he look evil? Nah, he’s actually handsome, talented, appears to be wealthy, generous when it suits him, and out to either tempt Joan into sin, or out to make Joan into the town crackpot.

Now we’ll never know, unless some cable network picks it up…

what? i haven’t even seen one episode, and now they’re going to cancel it!!!:banghead:
