Could someone explain to me this verse please? It says that the “Word was God”. I know that Jesus Christ is supposed to be the word incarnate. I thought that the Word was the will of God revealed in Scripture and (accorgin to Catholics) tradition. How does this mesh with the doctrine of Christ as the Incarnate Word.

I’m a bit confused because I’m not sure whether this is a Protestant, Catholic or generic doctrine. Protestants also tend to like to use this passage as a tool to promote sola scriptura.

Jesus Christ is the Word incarnate, made flesh an event in the course of salvation history, but he is the Son of God, eternally begotten not made, second Person of the Holy Trinity, the Word, the Logos in eternity. there is no contradiction. read the entire first chapter of John’s gospel, then slowly and carefully read the Nicene Creed again. He is Person, not a book, so reliance on the Word means reliance on the Person, not upon the book, so this does not hold up as an argument for sola scriptura. (the last words of John’s gospel also demolish this idea, since he says the world could not hold all the books that could be writtin about all Jesus said and did).

Jesus Christ is the incarnate Logos.

The implication is that the universe, once created through the Word of God, is now being renewed through that same Word come in the flesh as Jesus Christ.
