John 3:5 and baptism

Why did Jesus say “unless you are born of water and the spirit you cannot enter into the kingdom of God” if only John’s baptism was around?

Because the Kingdom wasn’t “open for business” yet.

Nicodemus didn’t know that Jesus meant Baptism. It took the Sacred Tradition begun by the Apostles to teach that this is what Jesus was talking about.

Because John’s baptism was not sufficient (despite how worthy it was).

Jesus said that to Nicodemus in John 3:5 because He was about to institute the Sacrament of Baptism. In fact, immediately after their conversation, He went out and baptized (see verse 22), and then John explained that his baptism was being replaced by the Baptism of Jesus Christ (vv. 25-30) 👍
