I’ve been reading Thomas Merton, G.K. Chesterton, Fulton Sheen, etc. some lately; I would like to read Newman as well, but don’t know where to start. I’m not a theological expert by any means, so I’m afraid of jumping straight into some of his deepest works. Any suggestions?

The first book of his that I ever read was the idea of a university. I don’t know if the subject matter would appeal to you, but it is very digestible, easy to follow, and yet still full of his wonderful prose. Some of his other works, for example the grammar of assent, are not so easy.

Yeah, start with the Apologia. I read it recently and it’s excellent. And very passionate, as it was written in response to public attacks on his character.

I would suggest An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine.

All of Bl. Cardinal Newman’s works are available on line at Newman Reader.

The English professor at Oxford Fr. Ian Ker is considered a great expert on Newman, his biography has excellent reviews although I have not had the opportunity to read it myself.

I have found Newman to be not at all an easy read. Forewarned, etc.
