Hello All,

John MacArthur is your typical average Anti-Catholic Fundamentalist. I’ve seen him on the John Ankerberg Show, and he is a real peice of work. Karl Keating’s Catholicism and Fundamentalism and The Usual Suspects are the best resouces for dealing with people like him. Though for your situation, the best book I can recommend is Dave Armstrong’s A Biblical Defense of Catholicism. In regards to specific topics like Mary and the Papacy, the best books are:

Mary:
Meeting Mary Learning Guide by Stephen K. Ray and R. Dennis Walters
Refuting the Attack on Mary by Father Mateo

Papacy:
The Papacy Learning Guide by Kenneth J. Howell
Pope Fiction by Patrick Madrid

Also don’t forget Jim Burnham and Franck Chacon’s Beginning Apologetics 1 which can help you better defend your faith. I hope all goes well. 😦

Hey when do we get an update?

I hope things are still progressing well and that if you need anything at all you’ll gimme a yell.
Pax tecum,

Things are going very well. It’s been (now that we’re moving in the right direction together) a real blessing for me that forced me to learn a lot about my faith. We have such a full and rich faith - it’s amazing really. Jesus did not leave here and expect us to “pray a lot and figure it out”. We have the Church, the saints in heaven and on earth, the Sacraments and so much more to help us in our journey. I feel kinda bad for those in the other “Christian” faiths who are out there on their own to figure it all out.

I’ve had the chance to speak at length to other Catholics, who, like me, had no idea of how to defend their faith and who, consequently, had a less than solid faith.

I still wish that we had a more solemn Mass. People seem to have little or no respect for what’s happening there. There is so much distraction that it’s infuriating to me at times that I can’t concentrate on the Word and the Eucharist. People are just there because of their obligation and not really because they want to be there. Consequently, they do not participate and their kids don’t hep matters.

But we’ll figure it out.

So thanks for all your help, advise, prayers and everything - all of you.

I’ll be around.

As a protestant I would encourage you to explore JM’s argument simply to see if he is right. Its easy to dismiss someone because they seem to far out there. Read his stuff. I don’t think JM is one who deals with anything without integrity. I’m not saying I agree with all he says but I think he is authentic in his belief. Don’t be afraid to explore his ideas. It will make strong your faith. Catholic or potestant. We loose nothing by questioning.

Tell you what, smelton, how about you pick what you feel to be JM’s strongest argument and we’ll work through it together?

If you so choose, please start a new thread with the subject line “John MacArthur’s Strongest Argument”; I would love to discuss this with you and see where right-thinking will get us.

God Bless,

I would propose that JM’s arguements are dishonest and without integrity.

I am not just throwing this out with prejudice but in a real effort to preserve truth.

As the previous poster said feel free to present JM’s best arguement in a new thread and we will be happy to respond to it. In an effort to present truth we can retain as our sources if needed only secular, or non-catholic (for the Catholic side of the discussion) and secular (Catholic for the other sides of the discussion) If we fairly examine the issue I am sure we can answer any objection JM has.

Amen, we lose nothing by questioning, and seeking truth.

In Christ

I would love to do that except I’ve not read what JM says about the Catholic Church. I’m simply suggesting that the person explore what he says. The truth is the truth whether JM is correct or not. I’m sure though that JM is authentic in his belief. I’ve read enough of his stuff to know that he tries to the best of his ability to do that. I’m not saying he is always right. (I personally disagree with his position on predestination) I just don’t think it hurts to inquire and see if what he says is true. I don’t mean to sound like I’m afraid to address JM’s issues, I simply have not heard his arguement.

I can understand that, and I appreciate the integrity it takes to say when you’re not an expert in the field.

As for researching JM…I can’t say I would recommend it as a starting place for people seeking the Truth. It should not fall to seekers to research every wing-nut who writes a book (not to say that JM is a wing-nut), and try and sort out who is full of it and who has the Truth.

For anyone seeking, I would recommend only those who have been recognized by experts in the field of study as being sound. For example, I would recommend the Early Church defenders of the Faith, like Justin Martyr or Ignatius of Antioch or Augustine or Thomas Aquinas; these are Christian experts who have been recognized for over a millinium to be sound.

I would also recommend C.S. Lewis for a contemporary study, as well as the current Pope and maybe Billy Graham. I would not recommend someone who has achieved a minimal level of notariety amongst some extremists.

Would you agree?

God Bless,
RyanL

P.S.,
We can still have a thread about what you think is the best reason for rejecting the claims of Rome…🙂

I too would suggest CS Lewis to someone and I have many times. He is one of my favorites.

Wow! So much activity in this little part of my world. it is so inspiring yet humbling to see so many people so passionate - so willing to help. It’s amazing.

As far as MacArthur is concerned, I can not say whether it’s a good idea or not to look into his ideas. I can only say that I was forced to in order to:
  1. know what he was alleging
  2. understand where he was comming from, and
  3. determine if he was right or wrong
in order to either help my wife back onto the right track or move myself onto another one too.

So I did study him - a lot. I likely know more about him and his preachings (can’t say beliefs) than most of you. I listened to his CD on my laptop and took 15 pages of notes, writing down, verbatim, almost everything he said. Then I set out to see if I could prove that what he was saying was true. Notice that I did not endeavor to prove him wrong, but rather right.

For example, was someone named Tyndale killed by the Catholic church for translating the Bible into English? MacArthur casually throws that out during one of his more venomous diatribes against the church. Is it true. Can it be proven. If so, that’s one for him and reason to believe that maybe he’s accurate on other things.

Well I learned that the statement, thrown out so casually was offered without a full explaination of the real reasons the state, carrying out the judgement of the church, executed heretics. Knowing all the details of the grossly innacuare translation and how society considered such things surely shed new light on the accusation.

Does MacArthur, then do this in other instances. Well, continued research revealed to me that ,yes, infact he does it in almost all cases - including reading around scripture to ‘prove’ his point. Taking things completly out of context to use the Bible to say what he wants to say.

And when he can’t do that, he simply makes things up.

MAC - “the only mention of vestments or anything like them in scripture is in the Temple of Bale”. Is this true?

Well I found at least 10 references to vestments and “things like them” from Sirach through Leviticus and into Exodus - I stopped looking after 10.

So maybe he just hasn’t read the Bible - or, just perhaps, he’s willing to be less than frank when he’s trying to make a point.

Let’s go on.

MAC - “Rome changes to whatever it needs to be in any time - that’s how the devil works”. “Rome will change to whatever wins over the people”.

Really?

There are so many examples of the Catholic church refusing to change just to conform with the times that this statement would be funny if it weren’t true that unthinking people believe it.

No research needed here. There is plenty of empiricle eveidence to show me that this is a far reaching accusation.

MAC - “Pope John Paul II gained the whole world and lost his soul. He is in hell today.”

What an authority we have in John MacArthur - with the power and knowledge to pronounce who is and who is not in heaven or hell. Aren’t we lucky to have such an oracle from God in our times.

MAC - “people standing in long lines for hours to worship a dead man.”

Worship him? Has this guy never been to a funeral before? Passed by a casket? “Paid their respects”?

MAC - “I don’t think Jesus would go to a meeting with Muslims and kiss the Koran (like PJPII did)”

No, Jesus embrased tax collectors, and the rest of those thrown out of society as trash - and embrased and kissed lepers and prostitutes. Asked the father to forgive his executioners.

MAC - “I’ve been to Catholic churches all over the world and at the center of it is always Mary, rarely ever is Christ present, rarely ever God, but always Mary.”

What? Anyone who’s ever been in a Catholic church is forced to see Christ on the cross as the primary focus of the building.

He then quotes PJPII “For those who have never heard the Gospel, salvation is accessible in mysterious ways.”

MAC - “Oh, so you don’t know the church, you don’t know the Gospel, but in some “mysterious” way, you can get into Heaven.”

Without ever reading a word of scripture or knowing anything, there is something within me - a sense that God put there, that there is a place in heaven for those who’ve never heard the Gospel. I just know by some sense of myself that he’s wrong here.

“Papal infallability was voted in in 1870 by a split vote.”

Well, it was 1871 and they didn’t vote anything in at all, but rather reconfirmed church doctrine. I don’t need to know if it was by one vote because MacArthur is wrong on every other aspect of it.

too long read on.

Part II

MAC - “nobody was really an official pope until 600 AD.”

No? So the word “Pope” wasn’t used? Is that what he means? But wait, there was a Bishop of Rome from the beginning. And if we now call that person Pope, what does it matter when the additional monicer was started. Unless, of course you can use the argument to cast doubt on the issue. So i didn’t even look into this one.

And on and on and on. the guy is, at best, mis-informed and sad. And, at worst, prone to falshoods in order to fill his church and his collection plate.

There, I said it. After countless hours of reading the guy and reading others and talking to many, I believe that the guy is without merit - on any issue.

On the positive side, he did help me better understand my faith, its’ richness, fullness, thruthfullness and timelessness.

So, in my infancy in all of this, I believe that anyone who truely looks into this guy - actually does the work - will run from him if they are truely looking for the truth.

Glory Be To God in the Highest! :irish1:

This is EXACTLY the thing that happened to me and what brought me home to the faith after over 30 years!

It wasn’t MacArthur, but the assertions were the same and like you when I found the terrible inconsistencies in their teachings, I really did get into the facts…and that led me home to the Catholic Church.

God bless you and your wife Mike as you dig your way through all this mire of false teachings to the gem of the true Christian faith. I found myself comparing it to this passage from the gospel. (Matthew 13:44) The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in a field. Which a man having found, hid it, and for joy thereof goeth, and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. That’s me now through and through, because I know that Jesus also said. (Matthew 6:21) For where thy treasure is, there is thy heart also.

I have told many many people that real New Testament Christianity is like a huge & beautiful diamond that I fall more in love with every moment as I explore each new facet that I find. That’s what those tears are all about at Mass as I worship Our Lord and then go and receive him in the Eucharist. Nothing compares to that until I see Him face to face.
Pax tecum,

I need some help. My wife, raised Methodist/Baptist and converted to Catholocism 13 years ago, was given a CD calleed “Unmasking the Pope and the Catholic Chuch” (or something like that) by MacArthur. Now shes very confused and thinks the Catholic church is the great Satan, praying to Mary is a sin, we shouldn’t call priests “Father”, only God can forgive sins, etc., etc., etc. She has promised me that If I can show her where things are “in the Bible” she’ll listen. But I have no idea where to begin. There is a lot of stress around here and I’m worried this may cause real problems in our marrage. PLEAS HELP ME.
Hi mwf,
I have listened to John Macarthur a lot.
Not because I like what he has to say but so I could taste some of the false teachings my ex-Catholic brother is getting.
It is more acceptable for me to point out the Falseness of John Macarthur to my brother
than for me to point out the falseness of my brother to my brother, 😃
Do this:
(Assuming you have a Catholoc Bible at home, and you attend Mass at least once a week);
(1). Learn everything you can about The Blood of Christ.
(2). Pre-meditatedly
Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to God, your spiritual worchip."

(1). The learning you can do from the Scriptures read at Mass
and from your private reading at home.
Begin with what Jesus says at His Last Passover (Matt. 26: 19-30) …about His Blood.
Invite the Holy Spirit to lead you ! (follow the tiny letters next to a scripture verse which leads you to other related scripture.)
Prepare yourself for the greatest “Treasure Hunt” in history .

(1). The OFFERING OF OUR BODIES is done at the Altar by simply “WILLING IT” to God…
as the Priest invites us to “LIFT UP OUR HEARTS”
and we respond by “We lift them up to the Lord.”
(where our heart goes our body follows)

Keep this simple and honest.
Be as direct with God as you are when you “PLACE” your clothes in the washing machine…
or when you “PLACE” the meat on the Barbeque.
WILL YOUR HEART, body, past, present, future to God onto the Altar along with the bread, wine, money, prayers…“These”
  • **Just Do it ! ** *
Keep on learning and Keep on offering…
and pay attention to what The Holy Spirit begins to Reveal in your Lives as the seasons come and pass.
You will overwhelmed with Glory as He opens up “The New Living Path” in you. (Heb. 10: 20)

In the Love of Christ
