Yes, in the gospel of Luke when Mary goes to visit Elizabeth, she is called her kinswoman. Since Elizabeth is the mother of John the Baptist, John and Jesus were relatives, probably cousins.

I thought so. I figured they were cousins but then I’ve been reading the Gospel of John lately and it made it sound like John didn’t “know” Jesus until he saw him in the river Jordan. I know there’s discrepencies in the Gospels but I figured that if Elizabeth knew of the Christ’s coming while John was still in the womb, undoubtedly she would have been around while he was born and John and him would have known each other growing up. I mean if my cousin was giving birth to the Messiah I’d likely pack up and move to Ventura, CA just to be closer to him.

It wasn’t until John baptized Jesus in the Jordan that the Holy Spirit revealed to him (John) that Jesus was the “Lamb of God”. Remember that at the time of Jesus’s baptism “(they) heard a voice from the sky, as if thunder that said “this is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased”, & it was shortly after that John told his disciples Andrew & Philip to present themselves to Jesus & follow him. John was imprisoned & it was then that he began to have doubts & sent one of his followers to asks Jesus " are you the one who is to come or shall we await another?”. John was in distress, as is common for anyone in prison & he allowed his doubts to get the better of him. Did he again put faith in god before his death? We know that Jesus said he (John) was the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, so I believe John found faith again & then was beheaded.

I thought that John had NO doubts of who Jesus was while he sat in prison. He sent his followers to Jesus so THEY may understand that Jesus is the one to follow NOT John the Baptist.

This is my understanding as well. John knew his disciples were dismayed at the turn of events, and also that his own time was drawing near. He wanted his disciples to go directly to Jesus, to find out why they should believe he was the Messiah, and begin to follow him, not John, who was about to be executed.

This passage, by the way, is the Gospel Reading for this coming Sunday.

I read Oscar Wilde’s play, Salome, about the beheading of St. John the Baptist. It was pretty freaky, but I liked it.
