What is the Old Testament significance of Gabriel’s prophecy that John the Baptist would “drink no wine nor strong drink”?

That is known as the Nazareth vow, the vow that Samson took. It seems that Gabriel was saying this child would be as great as Samson, who judged Israel. For more information, read the story of Samson in the Book of Judges.
