How do you defend the faith if someone brings up this guy from the council of Constance and mentions that he was excommunicated because he thought that if unbaptized babies died they would not go to Hell. The church now teaches that an unbaptiz?ed baby may go to Heaven. How do you defend against this

John Wycliff was not excommunicated just because he believed that unbaptized babies did not go to hell. There were 58 charges brought against his teaching, the most serious being denial of the real presence in the Eucharist, and denial of papal authority. The sixth charge against his teachings reads as follows.

“6. Those who claim that the children of the faithful dying without sacramental baptism will not be saved, are stupid and
presumptuous in saying this.”

So he was not merely saying that unbaptized babies go to heaven, but insisting that anyone who believed the opposite was stupid and presumptuous. That kind of statement about others was seen as presumptuous on his part.

Are you sure it was Wyclif who was condemned at the Council of Constance or was it Jan Hus?
How does a Council excommunicate a person already dead. Wyclif was already dead by the time the Council of Constance met in session?

Antonio

They anathematized him.
