I was reading each Gospel’s account of the Last Supper and found it odd that John’s Gospel did not have an account of Jesus instituting the Eucharist. Why is it not in there?

Allusions to the Eucharist are made. I.E. Those who do not eat the Flesh of the Son of Man have no life in them. I AM the Bread of Heaven, et cetera.
The Synoptic Gospels were written earlier in Savation History than was the Gospel According to Saint John. The Synoptics, with the exception of Luke, targeted a Jewish or mixed audience. Saint John had time to flesh out his Theology, the Synoptics were already in circulation. Perhaps Saint John didn’t feel it was necessary to rehash the Passsover meal account.

It is mentioned indirectly in the miracle of the loaves (feeding the multitude) and the answers Jesus gave concerned spiritual bread from heaven. God bless.

The Gospel of John is a poet’s gospel. St. John talks about the Eucharist a lot, and then he uses the poetic technique of omitting the thing itself to make it bigger. Since all baptized Christians got the Eucharist narrative (or something similar) at every Mass, he could rely on their memory to pull in what happened without his say-so.
The other thing to notice is that John seems to have remembered a lot more of the things Jesus said and did that night than the other Gospel writers and their sources. He was probably in the position of being the youngest person there and thus of asking the Passover Seder questions (“Why is this night not like any other night?”) but otherwise keeping his mouth shut and learning. He was also reclining at table the closest to Jesus. So he seems to have stuffed his memory with every little bit of Jesus’ talk that night, and was determined to pass it on in his gospel.

Exodus 12 → John 6
I find it to be a powerful explanation of the Eucharist.
Exodus 12 - the Jews had to eat the Lamb to be saved.
John 6 - people have to eat the Lamb (i.e. Jesus) to be saved.

Thank you for your answers. I do agree that John’s Gospel has many mentions of the Eucharist throughout. I was just curious about the specific time at the Last Supper like in Matthew 26:26-29. I suppose it could be as simple (like one of you mentioned) that the other 3 Gospels were already in circulation and John did feel the need to repeat the account.

Yep, yep! John 6. Read the whole chapter. It doesn’t use the word Eucharist but it describes it perfectly.
