The perpetually outraged defenders of all things LGBT don’t seem to even be able to consider the possibility that mollycoddling every impulse a person has may not actually be good for the person you are trying to help.

From the article:

"… people who promote sexual reassignment surgery are collaborating with and promoting a mental disorder.

"Dr. McHugh, the author of six books and at least 125 peer-reviewed medical articles, made his remarks in a recent commentary in the Wall Street Journal, where he explained that transgender surgery is not the solution for people who suffer a “disorder of ‘assumption’” – the notion that their maleness or femaleness is different than what nature assigned to them biologically.

“He also reported on a new study showing that the suicide rate among transgendered people who had reassignment surgery is 20 times higher than the suicide rate among non-transgender people.”

"… for those who had sexual reassignment surgery, most said they were “satisfied” with the operation “but their subsequent psycho-social adjustments were no better than those who didn’t have the surgery.”

Please don’t get offended when I say this, but there’a a difference between transGendered and transSexual

Transgendered is applied only to people that didn’t had sexual reassigment surgury.

Transsexual is for people who already HAD the surgury.

A transgendered not necessarily gets under the knife.

Thank you and God bless.

I have always wondered how a mental illness is corrected with a sex change surgery. The mental illness still exists. When will man learn," Father Knows Best".

I don’t think it’s as simple as that. People who are “living in the wrong body” know that they are. They have to under go years of psychiatic treatment before surgery takes place.
That’s a transgender person. A transexual person, doesn’t believe they need to change their body in order to feel “normal” but do feel a need to dress as the opposite sex.

It’s very easy of people who experience no sexual disharmony to just think that people who do should just learn to live with it, people commit suicide, or harm themselves and others. If some can be helped with the aid of a psychiatist to live as they are or to change themself I see no problem.

So you are suggesting that somewhere along the lines of their creation God has made a mistake? I am confused as to how it could be a wrong body for them when God knows them better than they know themselves.

God didn’t make a mistake. The Fall affected all of Creation. Here, Jesus makes a reference to eunuchs being born that way. Off topic, but He doesn’t state God did it.

When I worked at a hospital that performed “sexual reassignment surgery,” I was told the basics by doctors who actually performed the surgery. Unfortunately, the American Psychiatric Association was lobbied to ignore years of research and reclassify ‘transgendered persons’ as no longer having a mental illness.

One might then ask the question, God makes us male and female, yet we are one body. He also makes us with the intention of having a mental disability. Pretty hard to figure out.

The Bible tells us God created man and woman and after they disobeyed, all of Creation was affected. I have mental health issues.

I think that what this means is that for people who suffered from gender dysphoria, a sex change surgery is not the appropriate solution. Which I am in total agreement. Current culture was to treat gender dysphoria by living a lie and having them becoming transgerds and encouraging sex change surgery. That is not the right way to deal with it, specially in the cases of children.

People who support LGBT causes do not necessarily thing “mollycoddling every impulse a person has” is good for a person.
That’s quite a leap in assumption, and a grand generalization.

Do you actually *know *a transgender person?
Those who have surgery usually spend years and years agonizing first about what to do and researching what the correct path to take is.
It is not usually done on a whim or on “impulse.” It is taken very seriously, and often with the support of a psychiatrist or a team of them.

.
I do know a transgender person. He went from a looking like a man to looking like a woman. We had a talk about it. There was no agonizing. He told me he planned to marry his boyfriend.

Peace,
Ed

It’s called a mental disorder, no amount of physical surgery will correct a mental disorder. Is it very hard for the person with the disorder? yes. As is all mental illness.

My grandson suffers from Major Depression, but I would not have a lobotomy done to correct the illness. It is not easy for anyone, the patient or their family,

We all suffer in this world, it would be of great value to recognize that, and turn to God for Peace, When we know that he is our only Savior will we find peace.

I’m sure everybody recognise’s that we all suffer.

I’m no expert on this issue, but I have experienced two people who made the change. I can say I saw an improvement for those people in their lives. This may not be the case for everyone. Where I believe a problem may lie is when others can not accept people who change, cutting them off from family and community.

People can be very much willing to turn to God and still take their own life, this I have seen happen in my parish. So very sad when no one can do anything to prevent it.

It is very sad that sometimes people take their own lives. In the US there are suicide hotlines to help people who feel suicidal. I’ve been that way twice. Is there such a system in your country?

Best,
Ed

But doesn’t what you say make the data in the study all the more interesting?

I mean, if each and every trans person has a team of psychiatrists working for them, and the statistics STILL show that the surgery is unlikely to make their situation any better, isn’t that information you would want trans people to know in order to make more informed decisions in the future?

Hi Ed,

There is the Samartians here in UK. They can help with people who feel suicidal, but they are there also for people to talk about anything that is troubling them. There are other hotlines too.

I agree with a lot of what you are saying, in response to people who commit or try to take their own life, this topic is very close to me and I ask my Priest about this question, salvation and taking our own life. His response was very meaningful to me, he said it is only a sin if a person is completely aware of their actions. Mental illness doesn’t equate to someone who is aware of their actions.

I also agree people with a mental illness or disorder are many time condemned for their illness, not accepted or helped The state of mental illness research and therapy is confined to drugs, and lets talk about it… The drugs sometimes induce more problems than they solve, and the therapy is only as good as the doctor.

You talk as if someone doesn’t agree with your solution that they are being hateful, I can assure you that is not the case with me. I just don’t think you solve a problem by creating another one.

Here in Portugal, you have a movement atempting to stop the “patholization” of the Transgendered situation, exactly because of the therapists.

When someone goes to the doctor with this kind of problem, he/she usualy spends years agonizing on the subject, and building courage to actualy come forward with it, talking to a doctor. But most doctors here treat this people with such disdain and rudeness that they are often one of the reasons why transgendered and transsexual people take their lives.

You don’t want to feel bad for years, decide to get some sort of treatment, than be treateted like if you were a creature made of snot and mucus instead of a human being, no? That tends to create way worst problems.

And I’m saying this because my academic godchild is a transgendered person who got “into the system” [The Nacional Sexual Reassigment Surgury System] recently because nobody hires a girl with beard and male looks, and (s)he tells me how she’s being treated. Like disgusting wet and stincky garbage.
