Josemaria Escriva "the way" book

I have heard much about Josemaria Escriva’s book “the way.”

Is it a book book?

worth the purchase?

is it three volumes?

should i get the single volume (with all three in it) or should i get the three individual volumes?

The Way is a book of short paragraphs containing spiritual insights on various topics. Two other books written by Escriva have similar forms (The Furrow and The Forge) and sometimes they are collected in the same book.

I highly recommend this book! I was part of a brotherhood at Catholic University called “Esto Vir” (“Be a Man”) which came directly from The Way, and we take Escriva to be our patron saint. The quote from which our name comes is:

“Don’t say, 'It’s the way I am, it’s my character.” It’s your lack of character… Esto Vir! Be a man!"

Every one of his 999 points is so inspiring. They are broken down by topics so if you want something regarding the Mass, go to that section, similarly Charity, the Apostolate, and on and on. We give each of our new brothers a copy of this book. It’s not expensive, fits easily in your pocket, and is well worth it.

I can’t help but end with one of his points:

It is only one volume. However, it is often sold as part of a three book set, which also includes the Furrow and the Forge. All three are good, but I enjoyed the first one the best. You can read them online here.

They are not books to read straight through. They are little paragraphs. It is like a meditation book. You give yourself five minutes and you read a paragraph and then you meditate for a few minutes. Actually, I learned to do it by reading several paragraphs/points and picking the one that struck me the most. Then I’d meditate on the one that struck me.

I’d say it is worth it to own at least one of the three.

Is it a book book?

It’s a collection of (mostly)independent paragraphs. I like it, because you can read it from cover to cover, or you can just choose a paragraph. That comes in handy for someone such as myself who gets distracted easily.

Absolutely

The three volumes are probably other books he wrote. I haven’t read them, but I am sure they are good- I would get it. I want to buy them all, someday.

should i get the single volume (with all three in it) or should i get the three individual volumes?

Eventually, I’d probably get both- I have a pocket-sized version of The Way- it is nice to carry around, to pull out and read a bit of when I have a few minutes to spare. Also, I would feel more comfortable loaning out the small, individual books than I would the 3-volumes-in-one book- and they are great ways to evangelize.
