Hello,

A certain thought occured to me the other day.

I read somewhere, perhaps on this forum, that Judaism, or at least certain sects, believe that an unborn child is not fully human until it is born.

Then I thought, “Christianity has its roots in Judaism. We are fundmentally and necessarily related to Judaism. How is it that we could have such differing views on this issue. How did the Christain Church develop a stance on the “humaness” of an unborn child that was so different from the Jewish perspective/belief.”

Maybe I am understanding the position of Judaism incorrectly. I am aware that there are different sects of Judaism, just as there are various Christain sects. Am I missing something? If not, can someone please attempt to clear this up for me?

Peace be with you!

I’m not exactly sure about the views of the different sects on this issue. I am, however, fairly certain that Orthodox Jews oppose abortion (I don’t see why they wouldn’t). However, just like Catholics, there are many Jews who frequent the cafeteria. Just look at Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR). He’s a Jew who is a huge abortion supporter. But we’ve also got Gordon Smith in Oregon who opposes abortion based on his faith as a Mormon.

In Christ,
Rand
