“the Lord sent up a prophet to the piople of Israel; and hte said to them, " Thus says the Lord, the God osf Israel: I led you up from Egypt, and brought you out of the house of bondage; and I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians, and from the hand of all who ooppressed you, and drove them out before you, and gave your their land; and I said to you, “I am the Lord your God; you shall not pay reverence to the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.” But you have not given heed to my voice.”

My Navarre commentary says that this is the first anonymous prophet to appear in the bible among many. My Haydock says the prophet is unknown. I am not obsessed with this, just only wondering. Anyone have a possible name for this “anonymous prophet”?

Hi Larry B!

Our very great medieval Sage, Rashi (Rabbi Shlomo Itzhaki; see jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/biography/rashi.html)
cites a rabbinical tradition that identifies this anonymous prophet as Phineas. (Rashi cites the work known as Seder Olam Rabbah; see jewishencyclopedia.com/view.jsp?artid=428&letter=S&search=Seder%20Olam.)

You can find the entire Tanakh (i.e. what we call what you call the “Old Testament”) in English, with Rashi’s verse-by-verse commentary (altho’ he doesn’t comment on every verse) at chabad.org/library/archive/LibraryArchive.asp?AID=63255.

Howzat?

Be well!
