California has a rich history, much of which I have read about, being a native of its southern regions. I recall we studied the missionaries and Father Serra’s establishing the missions while I was in elementary school in the 1950s. We even went on a field trip to Ramona’s Marriage Place, a mission and museum in the older section of San Diego.
As a kid, we attended Mass at St. Rose of Lima in Chula Vista, and I attended Catechism classes on the weekends, in the parochial school section on the Church grounds. I clearly recall the lovely Spanish architecture of this beautiful church.
MIssion San Luis Rey stands just outside of Oceanside, and that is where hubby and I renewed our vows shortly after our marriage by a Baptist minister who performed non-denominational weddings, and our renewing them in the mission made our marriage legal with the Church.
California’s history is rich, vibrant, warm and colorful. Not perfect, of course. No history is. But even at its ancient worst, it was a far better culture and environment than it is, today. And the climate still can’t be beat!
It’s just a shame that my home state has become the modern cesspool it now is. At one time, it was viewed as the ideal place to live, and people flocked there in droves. Today, its citizens can’t leave fast enough.
What happened???
