I really got into Jung during my um er um…holiday from CA.
Any of you Jung fans? I’m wondering what the Catholic position on Carl Jung is. Are his ideas considered dangerous by the Church?
Archetypes, shadows, myths, symbolism, the guy is a genius …but…?

Have you been listening to a lot of Jordan Peterson?

I don’t think the Church has an official position on Jung himself.

Welcome back goodcatholic! 😀

Jung was very popular in the US during the 1970s -1990s and not a few priests and other Catholics tried to bring Jung’s ideas and Catholicism together. It’s sorta gone out of fashion now.

I’m not sure the Church has any position on June.

Yes of course. Peterson too. But I had already been a fan of Jung before that. What stopped me pursuing Jung before was that I read somewhere he got into some strange cultish rituals. I was just worried he might steer me in the wrong direction.

Well as long as you can discern what is not compatible with Church teaching, I don’t think there is anything wrong with reading his works.

Jung was very “into” ancient gnosticism and even published a book about it. Some of his ideas skirt what I would call the occult.

I honestly don’t remember! It wouldn’t surprise me if Rohr was one of the priests. Don’t know who Findlay is.

well that’s it yeah it is a concern. But the idea of archetypes is no problem is it?
certainly the shadow concept is similar to accepting yourself fully, warts and all, so you accept others the same way.

Findlay was a monk actually who studied under Merton, then became a clinical psychologist.

that is the question…can I discern? well I think I’m just as gullible as I was 40 years ago actually.

Oh yes, I know who he is!-- James Finley. I actually have his book Christian Meditation.

It seems like every other book was once about Jung and the archetypes, e.g. Joseph Campbell.

I don’t know whether or not the Archetypes are compatible with Catholicism. It’s never been forbidden and I’d guess as long as it doesn’t conflict with any Church teachings, it would be ok.
