Has anyone here served jury duty? Weirdly enough, mom and I both got a questionnaire in the mail on the same day. What are the chances of both of us serving?

From my experiance its really hard to actually serve on a jury.

I was given a group
I was called (some of those in my group were not)
I waited around a room in a day (some were dismissed mid-day b/c of obligations)
I was assigned to a case (which had a limit so those over the 45 allowed went home)
When I finally got the case the lawyers got to ask us things. They were so flipping general the majority went home.

So chances you’ll both serve on the same case? In my experience, it’s darn near zero.

Jury duty varies from state to state. And you also have federal courts in addition.

Both the state and federal courts in my area have a call in system. So the first step is being in a pool who may or may not be called to come in. I got selected for this in the federal courts. I had to call every Sunday for I think six weeks to see if I had to come in. It was super annoying.

I finally did get called in. Once in you’ll probably sit in a room. You may or may not be called into a court where they will empanel a jury. They will basically start calling potential jurors up. They ask questions. They then may keep you or reject you. This goes on until they have however many jurors they need.

I’d say the chances of you both actually being on the same jury are extremely low. But you never know.

I was selected to serve on a jury about twenty five years ago. It was interesting initially however as the week progressed it became a real drag
I was really glad to be done with it. I was called in again about five years ago
And managed to get out of it. Not something I look forward to I am all for professional juries

I was called about 3 times. Twice I called the night before we were to show up and
we were no longer needed.
Once I went and sat for many hours before
we were allowed to go home.
I have never served on a jury.
A friend of mine served on a murder trial.

I’ve been called three times…the first was a local court, and I sat on a two-day trial…the second was a federal case, and I sat on a four-day trial…the third was local, and I wasn’t chosen for the trial.
I’ve been called for a local court again, for late November.
Overall,my experiences have been positive.
