just a curious question

Hi. I was just wondering how catholics feel about pentecostals, mainly on your views to the way we receive the Holy Spirit, (Holy rollers, and whatnot). I am not currently an “active” church member mainly because I cant find a “united” church. Which as you can imagine leaves me with many, many questions and worries. I have inquired about this with another denomination and was told that we receicve an unholy spirit when we recieve the Holy spirit. I am just utterly confused as to where to go from here. I know what my personal beliefs are, I just dont know where im supposed to be to worship.
 
I have no way of knowing what kind of spirit is being received.
It is possible that at times it is good - it is possible at times, it may be bad.
I suspect the person who told you they know it is bad was expressing an opinion.

The reason I choose to be a catholic is because I believe in Jesus’s promises.
He gave Peter a special promise - and He has kept it.

We are now witnessing what has been occuring since the very beginning of christianity…a leader of the Church will pass, and through the gift of apostolic succession, another will take his place.
As Peter’s successor he will inherit the promises Jesus gave to Peter.
The Holy Spirit has protected this church all these centuries, and will continue to do so.

I believe the further people “splinter off” from this solid foundation, the more difficult it is for them to remain in union with each other.

I have had catholic friends leave the Church in search of the “spirit” - and since then all they have done is split with each other and form factions behind this or that minister or pastor.
They reject the pope and yet they follow their individual “gurus” as if that person were the pope.
 
There are a great number of Catholic Charismatics who beleive pretty much the same as you about the Holy Spirit and his role in the believers life.

They speak in toungues, have healing services, and give prophecies the same as any other Pentecostal.

But you mention “United”, do you mean “Jesus only” by that? No Catholic is “Jesus only”, we believe in the Holy Trinity and we baptise in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We do not baptise (what you would call “water baptism”) in Jesus Name Amen.

I was baptised in water by the father, the son and the holy ghost as well. its just very confusing when one sunday 1 preacher preaces somthing and the next sunday a different one preaches the opposite. I feel like they are giving me christianity in buffet form and i can pick and choose what i like. i DONT like that at all.
 
Unfortunately you can get a similar situation in the catholic church.
We refer to it as “orthodoxy” and “heterodoxy”

Catholics can take what they hear in a homily and compare it to the official Church teaching (the catechism, council documents, enyclicals) and see if their priest is adhering to approved church teaching (orthodoxy) or are offering teaching that contradicts or is not included in official church teaching (heterodoxy)

I live in an area where one diocese is infected with heterodoxy throughout the diocese, and two others seem to be very good about offerring solid orthodox teaching.

I’m not sure what church you go to - but the situation could be similar - that your church does have an “official” stance on many issues - but individual preachers may choose to go with their own private interpretation.

Hi dee -

I noticed your statement of confusion (highlighted). This is one of the issues many people have with protestant religions in general.

I read conversion stories where protestants point to this very reason for thier conversion to Catholicism.

One thing about the Catholic Church is that it has remained consistant for 2000 years of history. The things taught today are the same things taught from the beginning.

Hi there,

you said that you wanted to find a church where “everybody believes the same thing.” Although I understand why that would be important (unity is a great thing) may I just caution you that they ONLY churches I’ve found where every single member believes alike are the cults - Jehovah’s Witnesses for example. All members believe the same thing about EVERY issue because they are told exactally what to believe and they aren’t allowed to ever think for themselves or question ANYTHING. Although it looks like “unity” it’s actually being brainwashed.

I agree that it would be confusing to hear a different message depending on the preacher so maybe you’d be better off finding a church that has it’s beliefs written out - like a statement of faith. Then at least you’ll know where they stand on the gifts of the spirit or whatever. I have to tell you though that after wandering around the various Born Again - Bible type churches - some more “lively” than others as far as the spirit goes, I did become frustrated that two different people could point out different passages in the Bible to support their opposing views. That’s what I LOVE about the Catholic Church… we have the Bible of course but also the Catecism (sp?) - which is a huge book, and I can look up just about any subject and read the final word. Nothing in the Catecism can contradict the Bible. So although Catholics themselves may disagree about this and that - the Church has the final say so and it’s written for all to read.

Other churches I’ve gone to don’t have that and you’re left to figure it all out on your own, which is hard isn’t it?

In the Catholic Church, the teachings go beyond one individual person. The teachings are official and they are of the whole Church. There are people who do not accept the teachings, but they do not change what the Church teaches. To see what the Church teaches, you can read the Catechism or the writings of the Church Fathers.

I don’t like when people reject the teachings of the Church, yet still call themselves Catholic, either. But it does not change the teaching.

The Catholic Church teaches us to follow scripture and apostolic tradition. We do not teach sola scriptura, which is not a doctrine supported by scripture. The Catechism gives a general description of the faith. The Church Fathers are the writings of the first 6 centuries of Christians. You can also read the councils of the Catholic Church to see what we teach.

I think you meant to say that you hoped that you are not offending anyone?🙂

That links to an article on the sacrament of confirmation which is somewhat similar to the baptism of the Holy Spirit as I see it. I believe that I received the fullness of the Holy Spirit at that time. A spiritual reality, whether I felt anything or not.

We also recieve the Holy Spirit in water baptism.

Wasting time??? Pffff. This site is Catholic Answers. The point is to come and ask questions and get answers. Just wanted to say welcome and I’m sure you’ll find what you’re looking for here.

We’re about as united as they come worldwide and throughout 2000 years of history. Sure, there’s always gonna be some bad apples who don’t believe everything the Church teaches, but don’t worry about them. You’ll find that kind of thing no matter what religion you’re in. That’s what’s so great about having the Pope and the councils of Bishops. If there’s anything unclear about what to believe, they clarify it and let us know the right thing to believe. These explanations are guided and protected by the Holy Spirit. We know that the Church won’t teach us any lies because Jesus promised Peter (the first pope) that the “gates of Hell will not prevail” against His Church (Matt 16:18). Fact is, we’ve been going strong ever since. No other Christian church can claim to be the one founded by Jesus. Pretty cool huh?
