Just a thought, less priests because of smaller families?

That is a point on the continuum, to be sure, which only serves to cause one to ask the question… Why smaller families? then look back further to see all those reasons including contraception, the removal of the link between sex and marriage, a sacred convenant, and then ask Why contraception? then look back to see what happened in our country causing the mindset that having stuff was more valuable than the family, and so on. Our so called progress here in the Western world has included devaluation of the human person’s worth, leading to casual sex, abortion, venereal diseases, including aids.
My parish priest is a missionary from Nigeria where the Catholic faith is flourishing, and vocations are many. The society there has yet to be ‘enlightened’ to progressive societies’ view that greed is good, and family “planning” will enable the folks to avoid the ‘burden’ of having children and all that God will send them. They still value the union of a man and a woman with God producing a loving family together. Their wealth is in their offspring, not in a new mcmansion or an Escalade in the driveway.
There are currently 9 Nigerian priests serving in my state, by God’s grace and benevolence. I have met them all due to a conference/ retreat at my parish hall with their Nigerian Archbishop arriving to spend some days with them. We attended a Mass celebrated by His Excellency and concelebrated by all nine priests and it was a beautiful and sacred event. The reverence at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the spirit-filled homily by the Archbishop gave me a sense of humility, hope and peace.
While we once sent missionaries out to Africa, they are now able to return the favor, praise God.

Fr. Mitch on EWTN Live had a program on about seminary education and his two guests talked about that. Fr. Barron and Msgr. Morris.

They talked about our generations’ sense of privledge and selfishness to our own desires. It was an interesting program.

My Dad and my Mom came from families of at least 7 children, we were a family of five. Most families today hover around 2.
