Hello all:
I haven’t posted here in quite some time. Hope my long absence is forgiven. The area I live in is less than 2% Catholic, and maybe 75% Southern Baptist/Evangelical. Needless to say, if you’re going to have friends here most of them are going to be Southern Baptist.
Anyway, recently the largest Southern Baptist church in town combined with a few others to do “missionary” work in South America. This has been going on for a few years now. The groups from here meet up with a Southern Baptist missionary who’s stationed down there and do whatever it is they do. This year several of our acquaintances and some of our very close friends were on the trip.
When they returned we had dinner with our friends. One of them made a very peculiar statement about how the Catholic Church in South America is not the same as the Catholic Church here. I found that quite odd and explained that while there are some different cultural expressions and devotions the doctrine was the same. I could tell that that didn’t sit well. Later on I found a blog written about the trip. In the blog one of our acquaintances told about their experience of touring an evil Catholic Cathedral. She told about how the Catholic Church there was different from the one in the US in that down there they “worship idols.” Apparently, according to what I read, the tour of the “evil Cathedral” is an integral part of the missionary trip year after year.
So…evidently, our friends and neighbors are going down to South America by the hundreds and giving heaven knows how many thousands of dollars to a missionary who is teaching them that we worship statues and have “evil Cathedrals” where we learn that Christ is still dead or still a baby.
Needless to say, this has thrown me for a loop. I grew up Baptist and was never never never exposed to that kind of garbage and those kinds of lies. I’ve given our pastor all the info I’ve found. He has presented this to the Parish Counsel and, they are educating our CCD teachers about this misinformation that is being put out into our community so that our kids can be prepared.
My question is this…do any of you have any similar issues in your own communities? What did you do about it? Did you attempt to correct your friends’ misunderstanding? Did you send them any books (Catholic and Christian maybe)? How did it affect your friendship if at all? Any advice?
Thanks in advance,
Peace
