Came across this writting by Br. John Michael Talbot, BSC and I was wondering what others felt about it.

It would help if he would give some concrete examples of “externals” substituted for supposedly true Catholic faith. I didn’t find that the article was really saying that much.

I think he wants to make a statement, but is too afraid of “rocking the boat” to actually make it. I can pick of hints of irritation at liberalism, and conservativism in the Church, but nothing concrete. When you write editorials like this, you have to be specific about the problems you are addressing, and you have to give examples.

I find it somewhat difficult to assign any liberalism to JM Talbot. If you’ve ever listened to his music, you will see that he is deeply enamoured of reverent and worshipful music. Much of his work is very traditional-sounding.

What I think he is more concerned about is the danger of the Church being pulled between the liberals who would Protestantize the Church and the ultra-conservatives who would Lefebrize the Church. (If I may be allowed to coin such a phrase.)

It’s true that he is a convert from Protestantism, but I doubt that he is a liberal.
