K of C question...because I'm a new member

Tuesday night, I just entered the K of C that serves the Church I attend. To be honest, I’m not sure what I’m supposed to “do” or if there is a “doing” that’s really involved. I was seeking a way to really enhance my spirituality and realize that patience will reveal more to me, but at the same time…I’m just not sure what I should be thinking, doing, planning, etc…

Any suggestions/advice?

Congratulations! I have been a member for over 20 years and in 3 different councils. I used to be very active years ago as an officer and now I try to help with activities whenever I can. My advice for you is to attend your council meetings and meet your fellow Knights. Then pick one or two activities that interest you and help out. You’ll see that the Knights of Columbus organization offers countless ways for Catholic men and their families to serve our Church and communities.

Meet with your Deputy Grand Knight or Program Director, if your council has one, and find out what committees your council. Then compare where your interests are and where they need the most help. Then, dive on in.

Also, keep in mind that in order to hold certain positions, you need to be a third degree or higher.

Obviously, I’m a 1st degree and was extremely naive, but I’m jumping in with both feet…

I suppose somewhat like a rebel without a cause…lol…

My dh is a 4th Degree Knight and I’m in the Ladies Auxiliary just so you know I’m not offering advise under false pretenses.

Seriously? The next thing you need to do is go through the 2nd and 3rd Degrees. Completing these next steps will answer many of your questions.

The Knights councils I’ve seen and been a member of tend to emphasize service more than spirituality. Sure, they will have rosaries and masses and what-not, but you likely won’t find your council going on spiritual retreats, or the like. Rather, they will be in the community, serving the needy and raising money for the poor and disabled.

If you are seeking to enhance your spirituality, and your council isn’t that kind, do not be discouraged. Instead, perhaps you can begin a structured prayer life, e.g., with some form of the Liturgy of the Hours, or develop a devotion to the Sacred Heart, Padre Pio, or Our Lady of Perpetual Help, for instance.

As I said, SOME positions are open to 3rd degree’ers only. MOST are open to ALL knights.

That’s good. We need ACTIVE members and not members who are Knights in name only.

Your first step is to go to your council meetings. They will discuss various ideas they have- either things they are working on currently, or things they would like to work on. You can offer to volunteer whenever they need volunteers for things, and make friends with your brother Knights. Feel free to comment on the discussions as others do, and mention any ideas you have to the council (maybe to one or two members in private first, if you are not sure of what kind of activities the council is able to do). I also suggest you take your 2nd and 3rd degree at your first opportunity- and your 4th degree as soon as you can as well.
