In Friday’s reading, (third week in Advent) Isaiah (56:1-3a, 6-8) tells us that God is going to gather to Himself many foreigners. He’s sure done that alright!

But then Isaiah goes on to speak about who these people are: those, he says, who keep the Sabbath free from profanation and keep their hands from evildoing. Whoever keeps the Sabbath free from profanation and holds to His covenant will be brought to to His holy mountain.

We are not to be doing servile work on Sunday. Another thing we should not be doing on Sunday is shopping.

Obviously some things need to be done, such as looking after people in hospitals and rest homes, and other essential services. But when we shop on Sundays we help perpetuate the ‘need’ for shops to be open which means employees are required to work.
