With the growing antagonism against Muslims and all people who fit the profile (anyone with brown skin), a priest from Kerala serving the Latin Catholic Community in Melbourne Australia was stabbed in a hate crime. The assailant yelled “you are Muslim or Hindu, I will kill you” as he ran to the altar to stab the priest. Thankfully the priest is fine. This just goes to show how far the intolerance has come to grow against Muslims. Similarly a South Indian engineer was killed in the United States because the suspect believed he was Muslim. Let us pray against generalizations and pray for tolerance among all peoples and all communities.

‘While the ceremony was on, the accused came forward and shouted that since he (Mathew) is an Indian, he couldn’t conduct the mass.’
Sounds like a racist thing rather than a religion thing.

The suspect also questioned the priest if he was Muslim or Hindu. His rationale seems to be triggered by both racism and intolerance towards other religions. The priest is an Eastern Catholic of the Syro Malabar Eparchy of Thamarasserry who was sent to do pastoral care for Latin Catholics in Melbourne, this event is quite a shame.

Was the man who stabbed him a Catholic? The priest had been at that Church for 4 years, so the Italian man who stabbed him could not have been a parishioner?

So strange and sad. I fail to see how a Catholic could visit a Catholic Church a believe that the priest who is presiding over the mass is not Catholic?

We should pray for both the Priest and this man who was driven by such hate to attack a priest inside the Church.

Dear Thomas48,

This is a despicable act which shows the level of ignorance and bigotry that some are steeped in. 😦

Praying for this priest’s recovery.

Again as in the last thread.

The 72yo that stabbed the priest was mentally ill. He is in a psych facility being assessed.

Quit making this more then it is.

A 72-year-old man has been charged over an attack on a priest at a Melbourne church.

The Fawkner man is accused of stabbing Tomy Kalathoor Mathew, 48, in the neck moments before the priest was due to give the 11am Italian-language mass on Sunday.

The older man was charged with intentionally and recklessly causing injury and bailed to appear in the Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on June 13.

The offender has been taken to hospital for assessment, police say.

The attack was described as “appalling” by the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne.

“This is appalling behaviour and people should never be treated like this,” Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne spokesman Shane Healy told AAP on Sunday.

“This fellow is doing wonderful work for his parishioners and this is really a blight on the great work that many, many Catholic priests are doing.”

He was taken to a nearby hospital in a stable condition.

Vicar General Monsignor Greg Bennet said the priest was doing well in hospital and wanted to get back to work soon.

“His thoughts are only for his parishioners,” he said.

Dear Roseeurekacross,

Thank you for the clarification.

Prayers for the assailant as well.

“Mental illness” is always the case when non-minorities commit a crime. Mental illness or not the man still acted on bigotry and hate, he was sane enough to discern this priest as either Muslim or Hindu and go in for the attack.

No.
He is an aged Italian Catholic, in a psychiatric hospital in Melbourne for those whose criminal crimes result from some form of mental illness. Being assessed. He was not sane at the time. Sane people dont run around stabbing others in Church at age 72.

Italian catholics are just another established ethnic group here. We have a lot of Indian Priests here too. There are 2 in my Parish.

Please dont invest Australian culture with the thinking prevalent in your place in space. Especially Melbourne. Its one big melting pot.

Welcome to Melbourne.
