Does anyone have any experience with these two devices in regards to running Catholic apps such as imissal, Verbum or any others? Also how is the internet browsing, calendar, etc? I won’t be watching many movies, listening to much music, or playing any games on it. Thanks for your imput!

I have a regular Kindle and later got the full iPad. I’m assuming browsing, etc as you asked for is the same on the mini iPad as the regular one, and I would say go for the iPad as it is more versatile.

iPad, hands down.
Does things kindle doesn’t, like I message and face time.
And I use mine just like a kindle too!

I would say go with the iPad Mini. I have one and love it; I use it for my Kindle books, my bible, and lots of other things. I have not bought it yet, but there is also a LOTH app, and I have heard of a rosary app and stations of the cross as well.

I know that the iPad Mini runs most iPad apps. There are very few exceptions, as the iPad is simply more powerful, but they are few. You should have no problem running iMissal. I have used a Kindle Fire before that my friend has, but I do not like it; in comparison with the iPad iOS, Kindle Fire is clunky and confusing. (Of course, that’s my opinion. Try them both out if you can.)

I’m pretty anti-Apple, so I say Kindle. Yeah, there is probably more stuff you can do with an iPad, but frankly this the age of technological overload, so don’t get trapped in the “It does so much more!” web.

I have an IPad and an IPhone, I use several Catholic apps as well as the Kindle app on both for reading my devotional, Living Faith.there is no comparison as far as I am concerned.

I dont have a kindle so take my two cents for what they are worth.
But there are many catholic apps for the iPad that I use on a daily basis including the rosary, which is awesome. I am an artist and it has art to illustrate the mysteries as you go along.

I also have the entire divine office with the universalis app. This works online, or if you pay a bit more, it is loaded onto your iPad and you can access it anywhere, wifi or not. It will automatically jump to the hour and there is more than one translation to choose from for the Psalms.

There are catholic prayer books for traditional prayers too. Not tried the stations of the cross.

I love my iPad and have found it and the apps a great way to pray and keep up with the church.

Buy the iPad. I have been doing my research on tablets and it is far better than the kindle. iPads are more versatile, you can put books on it from all kinds of servers, plus the apps are more numerous and you also have good tec support as well. If you buy a kindle, you are stuck with purchasing books and apps from Amazon which doesn’t always supply all of the books or apps you may desire.

I have heard great reviews from both the IPad mini and the regular iPad from both online sources and friends as well. If you decide to purchase an iPad regardless if it is regular or mini, make sure you purchase it from the apple store and get the apple care. I also suggest that you buy one that has as much memory as you can afford because it means you can put more material on it.

Go to the stores and play with them. I enjoyed playing with the iPad mini but because I was going to be using it as a mini computer, the regular iPad felt better because the screen was bigger and it was easier to type.

Do your homework and for heaven’s sake avoid the kindle. It is too restricted and if you are from Canada, it becomes a pointless waste of money since the online books from amazon.ca aren’t available for those North of the border.

You may find this comparison chart helpful: mobileburn.com/imagepop.jsp?Id=21279&file=media%2Fassorted%2Fthumb_tablets_comparison-feb2013.jpg

I tend to be irrationally opposed to all things apple (partially because they rejected the Manhattan Declaration App, but before then as well), but even so I think I need to point out a few things:

Of the ones on that chart, assuming that the chart is up to date (which it seems to be), the iPad is/has:
  • The iPad is most expensive.
  • has the worst resolution (picture quality)
  • has the worst processor speed. (generally slower)
  • least ram (can decrease speed if doing lots of stuff and/or memory intensive stuff)
That said, while that sort of thing bothers me especially since the price is higher, I’m sure the iPad can do whatever you need it to.

From what I understand, unless things have changed, the Kindle Fire does not have normal access to the Google Play Store (unless you root your device, which I tend not to recommend unless you really, really know what you’re doing). This limits most of what you can do - most apps of any sort (including the type you want) will be on the google store or the apple app market thing.

I personally would actually recommend the Google Nexus 7, unless what I just read about the Kindle not having access to the Play Store is out of date.

The Nexus 7 (on that comparison Chart) is about $130 cheaper than the ipad mini, of comparable size (though most say that the ipad is nicer looking) and has similar functionality. The Nexus does have a slightly worse battery than the iPad, but both are pretty good.

I would suggest heading to a best buy and playing with a few to see which ones you can handle better. You may also want to check out google play (if I’ve convinced you to check out the nexus 7 or similar) here play.google.com/store?hl=en vs the apple app store apple.com/osx/apps/app-store.html to figure out which one has the sort of things you’d want. I’m not sure how you’d access such content on a Kindle Fire.

I have just moved to Canada from the UK, and always have bought books for my iPad kindle through amazon US. It only depends on where you tell amazon your iPad is.

The other thing I like about the iPad( don’t know about he kindle) is that you get iBooks. I use that exclusively to save PDFs. Lots of articles and documents can be downloaded in PDF.
As well as knitting patterns! And magazines etc.

If you have a wireless printer than you are really set up.

Can you tell hat I love my iPad? I am buying an iPad and printer for a friend of mine who is very old fashioned and doesn’t even have a TV. I can’t wait! iMessage or face time will let us converse for free now we are now, finally in the same time Zone.

If you buy the iPad, that and iPieta will make it worthwhile because of the books on iPieta (in which I have no financial stake 😉 ) including the Scripture commentaries Haydock and Catena Aurea. Also has the Summa Theologica. Just getting those as books would cost more, but you also get the all Council (including V2) documents, Early Church Fathers, Papal writings from many Popes, several spiritual treasures like Introduction to the Devout Life, Story of a Soul…

Anyway, in addition, the iPad would allow you to download many, many books and articles in several formats, download MP3 talks (Check out Sonitus Sanctus for suggestions!) (and you don’t have to rely in iTunes for all this, get Downloads Manager (best for mp3) and Goodreader ( best for written stuff).

Radio apps as someone mentioned, Catholic radio, foreign language radio, Foreign Catholic radio… you can get one general app like Pandora or Tune-in for all of this.

I just have an iPod touch. I could have gotten an iPad mini, but I love carrying mine in my pocket and pulling it out wherever.

My son has an iPad mini and we found a case with keyboard included (under $50 at Amazon–don’t get an Apple one) which would have been fine for him as he is still small. My son at a liberal arts college says several of his friends have a full-size iPad as their main computer.

So, since you can get a Kindle app and have so much more with an iPod/iPad, I have to recommend the latter even tho I too am mad at Apple for what they did to BeamItDown… but I am also mad at Amazon for buying Stanza and destroying it so people tuink they have to rely on Kindle 😦

ETA: Plus I have to add in Brevmeum, an old-breviary app onto which you can load several days’ worth of the Breviary.

To clarify the kindles are limited to only products bought from amazon but the iPads and other tablets such as the nexus 7, are limitless.

It is important to do one’s research. If you can afford to wait a few months, I suggest that you wait until July or August because that is when companies will be releasing their newest models in time for back to school. Tablets are fairly new and the competition is fierce. Wait a few months and the present ones minus the Ipads will drop in price.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I will be leaning toward the ipad because I just found out that the Kindle Fire HD does not have a rear facing camera and the ipad mini does. Since I don’t have a smart phone, this function would be useful on a 7 inch pad device. A front facing camera is totally useless to me.

Kindle Fire HD is good, but it stands nowhere if compared with iPad. If you can afford iPad then I would suggest to go for it.

I have an iPad Mini WIFI …got it for my birthday. Also have a 7 inch samsung tablet and a regular Kindle WIFi. I like my iPad Mini…I have a Rosary guide app on it as well as a radio app that lets me listen to my local catholic radio station. The browsing is the same as you would fine on any mobile device…only the screen is bigger than a smart phone. Someday I may get a Kindle Fire…but right now I don’t need a 3rd tablet (plus, I can download some of my Amazon video purchases to an Amazon Instant video app on my iPad Mini).

For the price, if you’re on a budget…the Fire would probably be right. But you can’t access the full Android Market, only the Kindle Apps market with apps that are approved by Amazon for the Fire.

I like my Samsung Galaxy Tab as it has wifi and an option to pay for internet service on a per-month basis which is great for the few times a year I travel. It uses the Android platform; haven’t had issues finding the apps I want. I bought mine refurbished from Verizon, but it looks like new!
