Knanaya Catholic Churches Elevated to Forane Status

The St. Thomas Syro Malabar Diocese of Chicago has elevated five Knanaya Catholic Churches to the status of Forane Church and Region. A forane parish is one church in a region that has greater status above the others. For example here in Texas, my parish St. Mary’s Knanaya Catholic Church Houston has been elevated to forane status and presides over all of the lesser Knanaya Churches in Texas. Similarly, St. Thomas Syro Malabar Forane Church Dallas presides over all lesser Syro Malabar Churches in Texas.

This was a great humbling for the Knanaya Catholics in North America and a great amount of thanks was given to Mar Jacob Angadiath. The elevation came with an apology from our community to Mar Jacob Angadiath for all of the hardship and struggle we had caused him in the past. During the inauguration ceremony Mar Jacob Angadiath and Knanaya priests joyfully stated that the Knanaya Catholics with twenty-one parishes and missions in the United States now have the means for a diocese and a bishop of their own. Mar Jacob Angadiath expressed that he would give great effort to establish a separate Knanaya Diocese or attain permission to ordinate a Knanaya Auxiliary. I am very happy to say that with the elevation, a new peaceful and joyous chapter has emerged in the relationship of the St. Thomas Syro Malabar Diocese and the Knanaya Catholic Churches of North America.

It is the protopresbyter (vicar forane) – CCEO 276 – that exercises vicarious ordinary pastoral authority as a representative of the eparch (bishop).Canon 276

1. The protopresbyter is a presbyter who is placed over a district consisting of several parishes so that, in the name of the eparchial bishop and in the same district, he may fulfill the functions determined by law.
2. It belongs to the eparchial bishop, after consulting the presbyteral council, to establish, change and suppress this type of district according to the needs of pastoral action.
